wheel building

Looking for wheel builder preferably nr Derby....but willing to travel for the right person.

Got some rims and hubs coming so need someone to recommend suitable spokes and put it all together

I know Alan's BMX charge £20 per wheel if you supply hubs, rims and spokes.  I think they help you with spoke choice too and will supply if needed.

That's pretty good. I only live 7 miles away from Alans, but my local bike shop charge £55 to build wheels. They are really good though, and do loads of small jobs for me free of charge, so I can't complain

Honestly give it a go yourself..
Building wheels is the most therapeutic part of the build ( I do personally sad as I am)
Here are some very easy and quick guides to building wheels.
The spoke length guide is so easy to give you the information needed.
The vid of the Aussie bint is very informative is a great help..
If you fook it up a least you tried ..

always true my wheels using an old pair of forks and a front brake 
keep thinking I should get a truing stand,but too tight to but one (that's why I build wheels myself)

This was my make shift truing stand like yourself..
But the forks I was using I really shouldn’t have , as these was super rare Haro 89 bashguard forks but did the job..

Building the wheels is easy, it's the truing and tensioning part that does my noggin in. I get there in the end but oh my days.

The trick is to try and get each nipple at equal positions when building hand tight.
I try and count each twist or look at the threads on the spokes as a guide to try and keep the tension the same which makes it easier.
Working from the stem hole twist each nipple half a turn on each going around and around till the tension you feel is ok or flick the spoke for a high pitch equal sounds, but always start where you finished.
It won’t be perfect but doing the above is a great start so you can fine tune on The truing tool..
Zed rims that’s another story..
These are a pain to build as the nipples sometimes wedge into the plastic you must use washers but I have build without with less tension.

As most have said, give it a go yourself. It's easier if you copy a wheel first but there are plenty of guides online to help

I've built plenty but I can't true wheels for shit though so if you get stuck, Jack at Waller BMX here in the south side of Sheffield will true them for £15 a pair and if you let him know, will do it while you wait but give him plenty of notice and no chance over the weekend, his shop is busy

Not too far from Derby if you're stuck but most LBS's will tension a wheel up for you if you build it and can't finish the job, just ask around. Mark (Wini) on here is from Derby so drop him a pm if he knows anyone local

yup very theraputic , build em yerself 

 been using this rig for donkeys years to build my own wheels ,   old akisu forks , now got a magnetic guage to bung on the side n can get    new  rims well under 1/2mm out ,         depending on production flaws,    older/used rims take a little more work but you can get em pretty good ,  as Ady stated the initial tension is the key , the trueing part is easy if you get the tension right to start with , making some spoke tension tools is the place to start 

could help out if all else fails

The spoke calculator worked out just fine, one word of caution though, if you're building a radial pattern and having the spoke butt on the outside of the hub (as per pic) then get spokes 1-2mm shorter than the calculator says as the path of the spoke is shorter.
