Silver Streak build thread *Finished*
« on: December 14, 2018, 07:36 PM »
When I first got interested in BMX an older lad who lived near us had a silver streak. I loved it and when we went to the bike shop before Christmas 1982 to pick our bikes I hinted to my dad how much I loved the silver streak, I knew it was out of my parents price range so choose a Pro Star, it shared the same advert in action bike so was the closest I could get. I hoped like you do when your a kid that he’d secretly got me the silver streak, but no I got the Pro Star which I loved, but the Silver Streak was always a bike I’ve wanted and recently I picked up this rusty old 83 complete with a set of bars.

I’ve already given the forks an oxy bath and have come up pretty good although they’re still pitted.
It won’t be built totally to spec but I’ve already got a few parts for it, OPC set up, Suntour XCII’s, SR seat clamp and Shimano tourney caliper and pre bent lever.

Keep us posted on any updates Chris, I hope you have as much fun doing this as I did doing mine.

Yep I’ll keep updating as I go along with it Dan, hopefully I’ll be able to get parts off here for it, I’ve been through hell building the burners relying on the Burner Facebook pages it’s like a different world from RAD ;D

The forks were worse than the frame other than inside the gusset so hopefully it’ll all come up like that. Luckily none of the chrome is flaking so it should come up ok. Like I said it’s still quite badly pitted but I can live with that.

Always loved the chrome Diamondbacks b.i.t.d, would have been my dream bike if i could have afforded one!  I finally purchased a viper last year and built it up (it's in the Old School section). Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I found that DB parts are a lot more common on US eBay (seem to find more complete DB's for sale over here rather than parts).

Quick update on the build. Got a bit of time to myself finally so put the bars in the oxalic and stuck the forks back in too for a bit more of a soak, and the gusset end of the frame.

Frames still in but I think it’s as good as it’s going to get with the bars and forks.

Also stripped down the XCII pedals gave them a good clean and regrease and stripped the cages ready for refinishing.

That's going to be nice  :)

Is it going to be an original spec or upgraded aftermarket parts ?

I’d love to do it original but already have quite a few spare parts that will suit it and I’m too impatient to wait around for the correct parts to come up at the right price. I’ll probably get it built then slowly change parts to the original spec.

It has Dan considering the state it was in. It’s not great close up but looks good from a distance.

After a lot of oxy baths and elbow grease I think the f&f are as good as they’re ever going to be. I’m pretty pleased with the result as I didn’t think it would come up this well.

I’ve put a new set of decals on from Del as a few were missing and the rest were faded and scratched.

Got a few more parts this week too.

Black fluted post off Carl in2bmx given the wet and dry treatment.

Repop Kashimax aero off wini with decals off Del.

And an SR 420 stem from France ready for a resto.

Bit more done this weekend.

Not far off now still need a few parts, but will probably have to be put on hold for a bit while I save up some more BMX tokens.

Quick update on the build. A few more parts collected.
Shimano tourney brake set up.
NOS Fuans
Takagi 175 OPC with Sugino spider and bolts and no name 44t chainring which will do until I can find a Sugino.
Repop 7x rims and Suzue hubs. After a few people trying to hold me to ransom and fooking me about on Facebook for a black rear I’ve bought this NOS silver which I’ll refinish.
Few more bits and I can start building.

Few small parts and jobs done over the last couple of weeks.

Rear hub’s now black with the correct axle fitted.

Got hold of a tired Tange bottom bracket which has come up quite well with a bit of work.

16t Shimano 333 freewheel.

And picked up this Sugino 44t ring of eBay ready for a resto.

I’d have usually started building when I got parts but I’m resisting temptation and waiting till I’ve got everything this time. Just need spokes, tyres, and a headset and I’m ready for action.
