Ball Burnished Ripper advice
« on: October 24, 2018, 03:52 PM »
How do I clean up and polish a ball burnished ripper? Its been stuck in a lock up for years and looks what is like a Haze all over it? I have lightly gone over an area with very fine wire wool and it is shifting leaving underneath a pretty good shine, but this is gonna take an age to do  ;) anyone ever cleaned up one before? lmk any tricks of the trade you've used please  :daumenhoch:

Mine had been in a shed in Alabama for years and was covered in oxide particles. I gave it a SUPER-LIGHT clean with some Mother's Aluminum polish and it was spot-on after that. It still had the original downtube decals on it so I used the aluminium under the decal as a reference point.
Good luck and get some photos up.

polishing alone won't get you that 'ball-burnished' look again - you could end up just polishing it away (so go easy)
there was a thread somewhere about a guy who apparently could redo this finish but I think he was based in US or Oz

Have you got a picture? I never touch my burnished Ripper, except to just ‘clean’ it. Anything more than breathing on it and it will start to shine.
