Advice / help with fork straightening
« on: June 29, 2018, 05:46 PM »
Just acquired an early 80’s cruiser f&f.
Forks are slightly bent and I need to find someone who can straighten them for me before powder coating.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
I am based in the West Midlands.
Thanks.

I would put two bits of 3x3 wood spaced apart lift the whole bike in between and bend back..
my neighbors fence was used for this many times..

Good news is they ain't twisted.
You just need a car jack or similar you can gradually and carefully bend the forks back with
Don't be tempted to jump on them, drive over them or any of the other daft things you hear about.
Slow and controlled pressure is the key. You just need to find something you can use as a frame to hold the forks in while you wind pressure on the crown race area

Sandwich the forks between two planks and squish in vice Nice and tight. Cover steerer in cloth and slide a length of scaffold pole over it and slowly and gently start to bend back. Rescued quite a few pairs of forks like this. Also managed to straighten twisted forks using a similar technique

Wouldn’t all this bending weaken them?
