1985 Gt Performer build
« on: March 01, 2018, 02:32 PM »
Hi All,

I got this 85 Jap made GT a couple of months ago starting to take shape now but not really feeling the love with it at moment not sure on the white tuffs with the blue tyres and will swap out the straight post for lay back also the front 901 doesn’t allow the bars to be spun round not that I’d be doing any spinning round but defeats the object of putting a Potts mod on . Any feedback or advice on this would be appreciated as like I said not feeling the love for this one need some inspiration

Cheers Scott

The whole reason the world tour forks had the double cable guide was to allow the 901 to be potts modded and fitted as the arm is on the other side to other calipers. The bend in the tube is clear enough JUST once the adjuster has been replaced with a pinch bolt. But it is tight.

I know this is my Knight but see how sharply the cable end is bent to avoid contact.

Here's a pic of one I had in '84 with white Skyways/black tyres and at one point a black/white front & rear combo (if it heips).
Also I have a chrome '85 Pro Performer with black parts that actually looks better with gold Shimano DX pedals that match perfectly with the downtube decals on the frame. Try it on yours with the gold SX and see what you think.

Im liking it mate,

I'd ditch the 901's for MX1000's or 880's ... Just my opinion but the 901 is the worst looking brake ever plus you'll have to connect your brakes up the (yank) way round...  :daumenhoch:

Couldn't agree more with this ^ You could put a blue 880 on the front but I think they might be quite rare/expensive  :-\
Nice looking bike though  fistblump

Almost finished but still not really liking this build think I prefer the later more colourful versions of these anyway I’ve just Ordered a pad set from esemdesign and need to change post for layback and get a seat unsure wether to go with a kashimax RS or a repop dominator and will probably change 901s for 880s if ever come across some blue ones. Hopefully it will grow on me as I’ve started so I’ll finish.

I know what you mean about the colourful ones being better but chrome was the original concept of the Performer, originally it was the only option so it has some heritage. To find one in such good condition is difficult these days too. Stick with it and it might just win your heart, don't be afraid of refreshing parts to bring it to life too. I've built bikes that in the flesh didn't resemble the idea in my head and just changing tyres or a seat post turned it around. But please don't think about painting this one, if you want a swap to colour put it out for a swap and keep a fantastic chrome Performer alive  :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:

I’m hoping once it’s up and running I might feel different about it . Funny how we all get fussy over these bikes my mate had a chrome one back in 84 he was the rich kid I had a falcon pro from catalogue and would have gave my left nut to get a bike like this .

Finally got my finger out and finished this today decided on spokes rather than the white skyways just need to change a few bits in future to make it look better but think its okay for now

Don't like them with spokes, reminds me a 90s catalogue bike. White tuffs all the way looks like a bike from bitd something ridden by fiola in cali
