This is the age of .... Repop!!!
« on: January 07, 2018, 11:14 AM »
Ok so the Northern Monkeys were in Alan’s (Wigan) and the lovely Tom told me about the huge list of repop stuff that was arriving in 2018 ( many Alan exclusives) ..
Without going into details ( for fear of being shot ) here are just a few brands dropping new repop stuff in the next 12 months at Uncle Alan’s ...

Kashimax, A’me, GT, SE, Skyway...

As parts become impossible to find now and costs spiral there seems to be a new generation of old schoolers more than happy to have the look without the cost or authenticity...
Their market seems to be on the up..
The rise of 24s, 26s also continues ..
When a Burner with repop parts flies out of the shop for £600 on a regular basis what do we think about where Old School Bmx is at in 2018?

I would love to do all my bikes OG but repop seems to be only way to go unless you want to wait a lifetime to finish a bike or have endless cash flow just finished a 87 Master using some repop parts group 1 stem crank and fs bars all from Alan’s they seem decent quality and don’t look to bad but that’s my opinion others might disagree although the Dia compe mx brake callipers are one repop I wouldn’t touch they just don’t look right.

I though this was an old thread you'd bumped Ant when I read this part. Hasn't he been knocking out repop parts from these brands for 5 years or more?

Omg Dan there is sooo much more stuff coming ... new stuff GT Hubs (can’t say too much) ... it’s on an even bigger scale this year .. more than ever hence the new thread ...
It just hit me that for many new to the scene “the feel and and look” is what it’s all about  .. originality seems a forgotten thing in this world of new old schoolers

Not having a pop at repop .. for me it has its place but just observing another big wave which suggests a big market is out there :daumenhoch:

Seems to be the age of the rip off if you ask me.....seem to be more and more 'iffy' ads about.
Take this one for instance...'unstamped'  LG forks rechromed and up for silly money. I reckon they are just new ones with the stamp filed out and rechromed....I could be wrong

The only issue i have with repo stuff is some of it is as expensive as old bmx stuff .i mean 88 masters frames and forks are £450 .who in there right mind is going to pay that for a repo frame ,i know the original`s  go for more but cmon it`s a repo not 29 year old frame .
i bought a few bits but it`s like buying a fake rolex you know its fake and always want the original and will bother you till you get a original  ,not that i can afford a rolex  :LolLolLolLol:

I know how you’re feeling Rob ... I’m struggling myself (hence the delay of whether to do the GS Burner.. part of me wants to .. badly .. but I need the love to come back first )

I've only had a quick look but they look like original to me as the 3 short welds are there on the inside of dropouts and the weep holes at the bottom.

I think the new LG forks have a continual weld attaching the dropout to the fork leg on inside and outside

They can re-pop what they want, I won't be buying any of it for an old school show bike.
A rider I would though, but it would be limited.
One build a year, the only way to get it right. No rushing involved.

I can see both sides of the argument here. I built my GT with a mixture of repop and OG parts and will be doing the same with my Peugeot build. I’ d like nothing better to be able to afford to go out and buy all OG parts but with a wife and  three kids and what I earn that ain’t going to happen. Repop parts give me the opportunity to participate in something I love without breaking the bank.

Andy took the words out of my mouth. My bikes with repop bits get ridden. The ones without are for show. Its got its place though because the rides are the most popular part of the hobby at he moment so i don't see how it can't really with the amount of people taking part.
