Mongoose build - help me spec!
« on: October 12, 2017, 02:18 PM »
Hi all,

I have just bought a very clean original sticker 84 Californian frame. I probably paid over the odds for it. It it's a real beauty.

I need to spec it up and my remit is to keep fairly original but use tailor it to look similar to the bike I had as a kid, black Skyways, gold brakes, layback seat.

Question mark on parts are for crank and forks.

What forks shall I use which look oem and I can buy?

Should I use a 1 piece or 3 piece crank?

What stem and headset?

What chain?

Thanks!

For an 84 I'd guess that this would have had an SR MS-422 stem with a black base, a Mongoose stamped one piece crank and stamped headset and BB too. I'd say the best forks would be OG Goose forks if you can get some.

If you need a definite answer though, you need to chat with Johnny Goose (Bobafett) on here, he's RADBMX's Goose guru.

Thanks Dan,

Got a mongoose stamped crank on eBay tonight for £16.

Can anyone else recommend any upgrades for the bike without taking away from the 80's look of the bike?

Thanks!

My suggestion upgrade wise would be to go for parts that were on the higher end bikes of that year, so swap your wheels for Pro Class rims, bars for Renthal's etc.

Go for a one-piece crank and spokes if you can. Tuffs were cool but spokes make the bike look much cleaner. Pump your tyres up and don't bang too many kerbs and you'll be fine, so either a set of Araya 7X's or if you're lucky and find some, ProClass wheels

Plenty of ideas on the museum and the me and my bikes section as I said on your wanted ad  :daumenhoch:
Still limping......
