What happened to Prolite?
« on: September 14, 2006, 09:09 PM »
Looking through the Neil Ruffell tribute pages on Anyruffell.com, it suddenly struck me that Craig was only on Prolite for a year or so, then went back to Skyway.

Any idea why?  ??? Did Prolite have cash issues, too many returned frames....?  ???

either they folded, or the company that owned them pulled out of bmx

they came back though
in the 90's they had a few bikes

t.i.t.s. and light as a feather were two of them

It was because Freewheeler Leisure Products decided that they would withdraw completly from the bmx market, and it was them who distributed the Prolite range. This meant that Craig no longer had a sponsor, and the deal with him going back on to Skyway was that Peter Hawkins and Craig could not have anything to do with Prolite, so Peter told me at last years Southsea reunion anyway  :daumenhoch:

That was interesting. i didn't know that. Did Peter mention if he had any spare CC prolites lying around then?

Would certain Prolites be worth good money nowadays then?

I agree, but even so, they only really command the same sort of money as a 'run-of-the-mill' '85 Haro Sport - the key is finding one

I chucked one in the bin around 1995, they were really badly made - it had about 20 cracks in it

Where were the cracks? Mine appears to be quite well made.

it was ridden by about 4 people and was cracked in a few places around the seattube and platform and also above and behind the BB

it was really rusty too, a total wreck

although AD lugs had been welded on at some point so that probably weakened it

Hey Grant...  I had 15ft on mine... I rode it for about 3 months in 89... I did 10ft 540s on it also....  The dropouts where bad...  The MDP that i have here lasted 1 day and i think probally compared to all the other crap we where riding it was O.K... i think the TA was better though... I have my Craig frame here and also the first Pro lite forks also... They are coated in duck oil.... as is all my frames i have to keep them like new...

Did you ever ride the air master!!!!   I have 8 frames in a week...

I had a CC Prolite as well, but mine never cracked.  In fact it was my favorite all-time bike to ride.  I thought it held up to abuse very well.

Me too. I loved that bike. I also thought it appeared to be well made. Not that I was doing 15 ft airs on them tho' Maybe 1 foot would be a bit more accurate for me. Oh my 540's were also about 1 foot.  ( below the coping that is) ;D

A mate of mine has got a CC prolite. Its in great condition and it actually used to belong to Craig! The only problem is that my mate cut the frame in half and had it mounted on either side of an internal wall in his house, so it looked like the bike was through the wall. He is just in the process of getting it all built up again as a CC replica ... well, the front end anyway!

I have a baby blue one in my garage in the highlands , its made of Reynolds 531 I think as it has a sticker on the under side of the down tube, (it may have been added later). The frame looks good quality and the TIG welding is tidy + the loop tails make it stronger for sure than possibly a street beat or TA.

Rom bloke has first digs on it when I get home and manage to strip it down
