got these Gold Shimano hubs
thought they were DX but some digging about has shown they are MX hubs, HF-500

stamped up
FL - Dec 1981
GA - Jan 1982

they have a 15 tooth gear and split ring
the cog will slide on and stop, but the split pin sits in a groove on the outer edge
so the cog is still free to slide sideways
is there a spacer or something that's required?

there's little info on the hubs let alone the parts ...

Is there a plastic castle thingy behind the sprocket? That could be what you are missing.

Looks like you've got the Model FH-MX60. Hard to see a collar on them. Is there room for another split-pin behind the cog?

You should be able to easily get cassette spacers (even coloured ones) from any MTB shop that will stop the sliding and enable you to get perfect chain alignment.
