Noobie! Help Please!!! With Ammaco Mongoose?
« on: February 11, 2017, 06:37 AM »
Hi All,

This is my first build after being given the bike a while back.  I posted a picture of the frame a while back and it seems it could be a Ammaco wire wheel? It was bought in early 1983.  However it has black ACS Z's and had gold ACS hubs but these were knackered.  So i had them built up with some Suzue hubs (thanks Rob).  Not sure the pic does them justice as they look great.

I have looked at lots of pics but cant seem to find a similar bike.  My friend who gave me the bike remembered it being all original bar the brake levers and seat.

The frame pic is all the bits I'm keeping.  It all came up really well using the foil and coke method and i will keep working on it.

The other pic are the bits I'm replacing.  So does anyone have any of these bits or should i just try and find NOS parts?  Advice would be massively appreciated.

Finally, decals and pads.  Does anyone know if it would have had Mongoose decals or the Ammaco style decals/pads  Are any of these stall available.

Massive thanks in advance!1
Nick

Nick that looks brilliant mate, a really good bit of work and so worthwhile if it's your mate's original bike.

Del did used to do Ammaco decals so it's worth dropping him an email. I got mine off him years ago. Pads will be the issue - I found a set on ebay but they were for a Coolstyler so for a twin top-tube and not the best. I ended up flogging them on as the bike looked better without them.

Still limping......

If it helps, I have a Mongoose Ammaco Wire Wheel, which I have had since a kid, mine came with all Mongoose decals on it.

There are a few Wire Wheels on the BMX Museum, here is one example:

...although my decals are very slightly different to these, not sure why.

you will be able to get all the parts you need, do you want to build it back totally original or do you mind using repro parts?
Why are you throwing the calipers? they look usable. Are you going to be riding or looking at the bike?

Wheels look nice mate. The seat, levers, pedals and grips are from a 90's bike... the seat post, seat clamp and calipers are right for that bike and should clean up alright.  :daumenhoch:
Is the f&f chrome and are you planning on keeping it chrome or is it getting painted/powdered ? If you're planning on keeping it chrome and polishing it up stop using coke and tin foil... you'll scratch fook out of it. There are other methods. ???

Hi Damo

I'm happy to use repro parts.  The calipers are probably original but have more or less lost the gold colour, so i thought I'd replace them. the bike wont be ridden often so will be looked at most of the time.

They could easily stripped/polished if you were ok with silver, or get them re-anodised?
There are some decent repop parts about that are pretty faithful to the originals, but repop MX1000s are an abomination

Morning all, thanks for all the replys.  I didn't realise i had them!!!

So i have bought Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish, but can I use this on the frame as it says not recommended for chrome?

Should I have bought Peeks polish instead?

Bike nearly finished.

Never used Mothers, but they do a polish that the yanks swear by (not sure if this is the same one you have though)

As mentioned already Peek is great for Chrome though, following up with a Goddard's silver cloth (rubbing lengthways) is also worth a try
