76 Redline Squareback ( belly button lol)
« on: March 23, 2017, 11:57 PM »
Another Redline project. This came to me stripped of all nickel by the previous owner John Dalingwater. It was in a state and he meticulously cleaned and polished the cromo of all rust. 3-4 months going over it carefully. It looked like it was plated when i bought it. After asking a few platers about nickeling it it was decided that it would be better to polish nickel the frame. I believe they originally nickelled on nickel and speaking to Byron Friday some nickel flaked or fell off. It has now had 3 copper and 2 nickel coats. Should preserve it for many years now.
Plans are period parts. Have a choice of motomags, which need love. Tuff 1s via Pat A-lar and weinmann 20 x 2.125 rims with shimano hubs. Just about to lace up.  All coaster brakes.
Redline double clamp stem and some proline bars.
Some pics to see what keeps me out of the pub lol.

The weinmann rims were painted red and been a bit of fun stripping them. Hand polishing and look like they just left the factory now. Shimano MX hubs and 120 guage Cycle Pro spokes. The spokes are like arrows lol.

Oh me gawd, so SHINEY.
You're on the right track with the 12 gauge spokes if one is using wire spoke wheels in 1976. I need to assemble the same sort of thing with ACS hubs & 7B rims but have not yet found a source of suitable spokes.

We seem to think alike in that I too will be using a very early Redline fork & Proline double clamp stem with Proline [Microline] bar. Good choice says I.

This one should come up a treat & of course, as a pioneer in BMX, the Redline brand has been around essentially from the start, so it's sort of the Model T of BMX, yet still as modern as today in basic design & purpose.
Love it.

Hey CD! I hadn't unwrapped the spokes until the picture. Couldn't see the label until I moved some spokes out of the way. Didn't know the size. Will see if I can find anything and let you know. 7bs and ACS hubs sound spot on. I'm looking for a 7b for the Proline.
Redline certainly were a game changer with forks and then frames. Various parts too. After talking to Byron Friday he certainly tested them to the max!
Still undecided on cranks at the moment. One piece or 3 piece. Will see what turns up.

I use this website  http://oldschool-bmx-parts.blogspot.com.au/search?  quite a lot to help me identify what components were on the market in any given year. If you want to be authentic, then both Ashtabula & Takagi OPC's were the go.

Just select the component & year from the drop boxes & press go. Lots of interesting info there.
