Frame Restoration insight . Time means more cost .
« on: February 11, 2017, 12:32 PM »
I have recently finished this restoration for a member on here.

This is a PK Ripper and I have also repaired the seat post tube that was all cracked. This covers some more really badly gnarled up drop outs .

Restoration of this kind is very tricky and time consuming .

First you need the skills to weld aluminium with a tig welder .

Here I have done that job and ground off the excess. This is the last time in this in this process that any power tools are used.

This is where the hard work and patience starts . A multitude of files of different coarseness are needed and flatting paper .

Oh and oodles of time and did I say patience .

In total there are at least 25 hours in all the repairs on this frame then there's materials and electric etc .

The point I'm trying to make here is that even at a basic say £10 an hour you can see the cost for yourself . But as myself and others do this as we love saving anything in this great hobby we never charge full cost .

Just remember as well it can cost easily over £100 to strip fettle and polished a set of  wheels rims for example.

My biggest bug bear is being chased for work  when a person has no idea of the work involved and the motivation needed to go and do it in all weathers.

Skills  :4_17_5:

Worthy point too! some people have no idea and balk at the idea of paying someone a reasonable amount for an honest hard days graft while they will quite happily sit on there arse all day sipping coffees in an office and expect 4 times the amount  ::)
Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

Top job Steve :daumenhoch:

You are right about the time involved, most repairs I have done have been charged out at a rate of less than minimum wage.

Most repairs would be economically unviable if done at a normal rate of pay  :(

Nobody would be able to afford the cost of repairs I think? its only because of the skill's desire and know how of you guys who take on the repairs for nominal fee's and the love of what you do that makes it possible  :daumenhoch:
