I saw this question crop up on FB so just thought this might be useful

Soak pedal ends in hot water. Try to twist off anti-clockwise (as much as possible) with matchsticks or knock-up a simple tool with panel-pins. If needed prise out with No.10 feeler gauge. Once you can see one of the slots on the inside of the cap, just pop it out with something like a dart end

That's a great idea with the panel pins .
The only problem is the caps just turn inside the threads due to the slight damage when we use to chuck the bike to the floor which caused the metal lip on the edge of the threads to get damaged. I use a stanley blade to slightly remove the scrapes of metal.
With this panel pin tool use a pair of nose pliers to help remove..

I used the long nosed pliers a few years back and seem to remember them chewing in to the cap because their not at 90 degree to the cap. The panel pins like yours will work better as their both 90 degrees and the heads should spread the force more evenly

The soak is so important. I've left mine under the running hot water for some time with washing up liquid rubbed in at intervals. Then my trusted dx cap removal tool.
I like Adys idea as an addition to your method too.
