Derby Freestyle BMX Team shirt
« on: October 14, 2016, 09:15 PM »
So, I was chatting to some people on a Lotus Cars forum today, and one mentioned he used to ride BMX in the 80's.

He listed several bikes that he owned, from Puch, to Mongoose, to a Quadangle and eventually a GT Pro Performer.

He then tells me he used to race at Derby, and was in fact a member of the Derby Freestyle BMX team, and they toured around shows and festivals with a trick ramp and a quarterpipe every Saturday.

Of course my immediate question was 'do you still happen to have any of your old bikes...?' which sadly he didn't. (One of his friends still has an Aero Pro Burner rusting away in his shed though, so I may have to chase that one up).

He then told me if he could find his old Team Derby jersey then I could happily have it to go with my WHEELS one, and about an hour later he sent me this pic and asked for my postal addy  :daumenhoch:

Not seen one of these before. He said they were only ever given to the team riders, and not for general sale.

Just goes to show you there are some nice people out there.

Back says Holts Cycles - a bike shop in Derby that sponsored the team, or so he tells me.

I was a member of Derby club for racing and went to a few of the freestyle shows as my dad was club photographer and a committee member.  Holts cycles is owned now by a former Derby race team member Andy Pass (may have been on the freestyle team too?) Other freestyle team riders were Lee Morrison (had a Gen1 Haro freestyler with all the right parts) Shaun Spencer (rider in the Bandido?),  Tim Maskray, Andy Cooper,  Andy 'Cap' Brown, Eldon Stevens? May have been others but cant think of them at the minute.

Great find.

Thanks for posting that Derby info!

The guy is called 'Dean Bower' on the forum I am on if that stirs any memories?

These are the other pictures he sent me.

Shirt still hasn't arrived btw  :(

I'll be over-the-moon to get my hands on it.

Finally found 5 minutes to unpack this and take a few shots of it, alongside my only other original BMX jersey.

It's pretty smart - love the lightly padded elbows... as if they're actually going to make any difference during a fall  ;D

Can't complain for a freebie though. Well chuffed.

Anybody remember 'Holts Cycles' in Derby?
