Haro Mirra 540 Air - restoration
« on: July 01, 2016, 08:49 PM »
Starting my first restoration of a early 2000 Mirra Air .. Not the most exiting bike compared to some of the gear on here but will be nice when done ..

Picked the bike up on Wednesday one thing I did notice was how heavy the bike is when loading in the boot ..

The bike can be best described as tatty but functional I think if it was a motorbike it would be classed as a rat bike ..

The bike as far as I can see is very well made and all the parts look serviceable.

I have most the tools and stuff to restore things as I have restored 4 motorbikes so this should not be too much of a problem but saying that if anyone has any experience on these bikes the help will be appreciated ..

The plan is to keep the costs in check and not get carried away and restore the original parts rather than getting carried away on eBay etc .. I will aim to make it look like new in the original colours ...

First quick questions is there a company that sell the decals ??

I will post up a few pictures and keep posting updates ...

Looks good as it is from the photo's.  8) Strip and a clean could be suffice.  :daumenhoch:

They hide the truth mate ... The paint is rough ..

I have made some progress this week had an afternoon in the garage I managed to get the decals off the bike they are knackered but could be copied I think this is going to be the expensive part of the build .. Under the decals the paint was new sort of gave me the boost of energy to get on with it I can see what the bike could be ..stripped most the paint from the frame keeping in mind my tight budget I did this by hand wishing I had taken it to the shot blaster after 2 hours ..

Will post up a few pictures when I get the laptop out ...

Just a quick couple question for anyone who can help what size is the bottom bracket bearing on these bikes looks like 19mm and can you replace individual spokes to re spoke a wheel the spokes ain't that bad but for £8 for a set it will make a big difference to the bike ..

Kit list of parts needed

Head bearings
Wheel ball bearings
Gyro cables top and bottom
Front brake cable
Tyres tubes and tape
Bottom bracket bearings and covers
pedals
Brake blocks

Need to get all this for 50 quid  :slayer:

1) bearing - Yeo, should be American bottom bracket, 19 mm bearing size.     ... I think   :D

2) decals-  have alook, could be the set you need -->http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=400240       .....in case our own decal mäster del aint got a set

3) spoke individually - sure you can respoke individual spokes. Looks You need Spokes 2.0mm straight gauge ( https://knowyourbike.com/haro/mirra-540/2000 )

Edit: about 1) yep should be 19 mm, äs i've seen a 1999 Model with 19mm (http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/haro/63623 darkian's) and a 2003 also running 19mm (http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=230792  wired's resto (post #25) )

Thanks guys .. those builds really are top work gives me ideas for this build ...

Here's a bit of a close up of the frame ... just in case the picture hid the real state of the bike but for £20 what can you expect ...
[ Attachment: You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Quick update

painted the bar clamp with Halfords satin which looks near to the original finish used a thin coat of etching primer on a well degreased surface, then thin coast of satin .. looks pretty good ... also prepped and painted the bolts with "plasticote" chrome they look ok I might replace these at a later date with zinc coated of polish .. the bolts look allright at a glance ..

Made a start on the frame I could have taken this down the bead blasters but in the spirit of this built I am prepping by hand .. I like the wealds and general quality of the frame it really is well made ... the frame has a few small dings nothing to get upset about I was thinking of polishing the frame but the dings will show if I paint it I can "hide" them ...

Starting to get into this now ... will crack on this week as not so busy with work etc ...

Cheers
Paul

I had a good go at the frame this evening was tempted to start the process of polishing but thought I would stick to the plan anyway I gave it a bit of a trial run with the "BMW Jet black" ...

Looking like it's coming together well for £20 mate.

As said above, if you're on a tight budget bang up a wanted list of exact parts (19mm BB bearings for instance) and I'm sure people will have stuff  :daumenhoch:

thanks again I will put a list on the wanted page ... I saved the gyro and bottom cable ..

Had a "working from home" day today with the kids at the child minders and the Mrs at work ...

I finished prepping the frame and got the etching primer on will blow a coat of black on it later after it has "baked" in the sun good job the mrs is at work .... bit like putting parts in the dish washer  :knuppel2:

Another problem solved ... the sprocket has a nice design on it my sprocket if rough and will need painting ...

I was racking my brains on how to get this back on the painted sprocket easy answer get a sign writer on the job ... my dad retired years ago but can still sign write when needed ... only cost me a few tins of beer ...

this is the original design

Bit more of an update ...

I put a coat of black on later this afternoon which took a whole can of paint I needed to get another coat on found a tin of Peugeot Graphite grey which will do as a base coat I am fatting it back anyway ... sort of growing on me the graphite idea I might see if Halfords have a really dark graphite near black ...

the head bearing has a golf ball effect can you get replacements without replacing the frame part ?? be a shame to have to start knocking the frame about ... if anyone has this part please let me know

cheers
