GT Pro Build Thread (Now Finished)
« on: June 11, 2016, 03:55 PM »
After lurking around on here for a few years I've finally got round to building something. Serial no has been removed from bottom bracket but I was sold it as a 1985. I bought it of the museum as needing restoring so got it at a good price or so I thought until customs intervened. This is how it arrived to me.

Apart from the rust it's in great condition dropouts brake bridge and seat post mast are near perfect.
It's too far gone for a oxalic bath and the chrome is peeling around the rusty areas so I've set about cleaning it up and removing the rust.

It's looking much better but spoke to SBD who's advised me to have the chrome removed before powdering so it's saving up time again before I can get some paint on it.

Few more pictures

And a few parts I've got for it. Not sure on black or silver for brakes yet.

These are the best thread  :)

Have you decided on a colour combo of parts yet?

Yeah going for black and silver/chrome parts. It's going to have a few reissue parts on it to keep costs down but have managed to get quite a few og parts at decent prices

Few close up pics of parts
Nice SR Pro bars with cheeky GT decals and ame round repops

Sugino spider and bolts with eBay 44t machined tooth chainring

Repop Kashi aero with decals off del and Allen key guts off eBay

Suntour power stem originally silver was a bit rough so gave it a resto and painted black.

Suntour XC IIs off Patric again a bit rough so given a resto. Still looking for an end cap if anyone's got one lying around.

SR clamps got the silver one off Patric, again in rough shape so stripped and polished. Black one is NOS bought off eBay. Not sure which one to go with yet.

Repop tech 3s again not sure which colour to go with yet depends on what colour caliper I get. Been thinking about getting an OG one though as the quality of these doesn't seem great.

After pricing up getting the chrome removed and the added costs of postage to send it to SBD to get it powdered I was looking at about £150 which after getting stung by customs costs were getting out of control, so having worked as a painter up to a few years ago I decided I'd have a go at painting it myself. My brother still works in the industry so got everything I need for about £30. First of all a coat of etch primer followed by a couple of coats of high build primer, then a top coat of Spies Hecker Permacron. Only done the forks up to now as a trial run to make sure I didn't make a mess of it but I'm very pleased with the results. Just need a nice warm day now to tackle the frame.

A proper "Rad" build thread  :4_17_5:
Good work on the forks mate.
Glad to see someone else who hasn't got limitless pockets to spend on a build and thinks outside the box  :daumenhoch:

Thanks mate , I can't really afford to be doing this build at all and if my wife ever finds out how much money I've spent already I'm in big trouble! But I'm loving doing this build and the satisfaction of doing stuff myself makes it even better.

This is my type of build Chris, very similar to the 85 GT Pro that I did 2 years ago, but for the colour. Nice colour by the way, and I'm made up to see someone else that's not afraid to step down Repop Street.  :coolsmiley:

Thanks Dan, it won't be to everyone's tastes due to colour, Repop parts, wrong decals etc but really enjoying building this :daumenhoch:

I doesn't matter, as long as you love it.

I took mine to MK last year, some guy asked me if he could have a ride on it as he said "it was the nicest bike here", it was a great accolade.

Thanks Dan I've spent a hell of a lot of hours on this but I'm really pleased how it's turned out. Hopefully I'll get time to get the parts I've got for it fitted this week and get some more photos up.

Thanks for the comments guys wasn't too sure about the red myself but fancied something a bit different to the usual gt colours you see. Here's a few more pics not the best quality but gives an idea of how it'll look with the black and silver/chrome parts.
