Best way of cleaning gumwall tyres - tips
« on: August 24, 2017, 08:47 AM »
Hi all. I have some very old Cheng Shing tyres that I picked up from MK for £8. They looks quite dry and very dirty, but they will be ideal for my Torker build. I've done what Mr Rigby said, nail brush, hot water, soap etc.. it got a lot off (including made the bath turn Red! ) but the gumwalls still look dark and grubby.

What would you recommend?

Would Tesco Thin Bleach if I soaked them kill them completely?

I've tried the dishwasher and all that was doing was remove the gumwall sealant, which isn't good.

Really want these cleaned up nice.

Any tips you can give me, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Matt  ;)

Adding to this... I tried CIF and nailbrush for an hour or so last night, CIF worked but didn't get them back and remove those shadows and darkness on the gumwalls...  :(

if all else fails ... you could paint them!

not as crazy as it sounds ... I've seen someone paint black wall tyres with gum coloured rubber paint and they looked good!

I'm sure there was a thread started ages ago and someone had great results, but can't remember if he revealed his secret.

You could try the dishwasher method, but i've always been cautious of it as you can't control gentle/powerful the cleaning process will be. When i clean tyres using the bath, hot water, nail brush and washing up liquid method, i'm sweating like a bastard after 10 minutes. If you're not, then you need to give it some more welly. Keep renewing the water, and keep renewing the brush (i go through 2-3 to do a pair of tyres). There's only so mich you can clean them up though. 30 years of ground in dirt and dryness is hard to eliminate completely
