A hello from me..
Hi, My names Alan. I have motorcycles. I have cars. I now have a desire to build BMX's. In the olden days I had many but couldn't afford nice bikes. Now I am old and cannot afford nice bikes. I can buy them over a long period of time and I think I'm going to enjoy tracking down oddities that I don't need but think I do.
I have just paid up for 12 months. I plan to stick around so thought I may as well.
Thanks,
Alan

Thanks all! What a warm welcome.. I am living in sunny Grimsby at the minute having moved here a few years back from the West Midlands.
I have just joined the Grimsby & Cleethorpes BMX Group on Facebook. I tend to be a bit of a lurker on facebook and forums. This is why I joined as a member straight away.. My input will probably be very limited especially judging on some of the skills and experience on the forum (yes Jaymz - I am getting reading!).
RetroDan - I was in the process of purchasing a frame on eBay. It just not going according to plan at the minute. It was a little bit of a gamble to be fair.. seems to be going off at a bit of a tangent.
Ideally I'd like a Haro Freestyler Master (simply because I used to drool at them many years ago (and still do)) but the prices are a little too high for me or the amount of work required is too high. It seems a minefield of copies, frames with incorrectly placed serial numbers, serial numbers removed, details that have been coated over.. im sure you have all seen it time and time again. For someone coming back to the magical world of old school bikes its a bit daunting. I guess I'll save, read and save some more! I do tend to prefer the trick/freestyle bikes more than race bikes. Mainly because I never had one and always wanted one.
Was typing away as BMX1973 added the comment.. - I don't think it ever left to be honest.. I see people wheelying down the road and think "you call that a wheelie?" - then I suddenly realise I am over 40!

If you need advise on anything before buying. Put a thread up in BMX Chat and get them Q's answered.

Thanks for that BMX1973. Chances are I'll keep on eye on the sales pages here. I am keen to get something built but should remember to not buy out of desperation! I've done that in the past and it never works out

dcbmx posts often in the sales threads and there's usually some gems and bargains to be had even once you add the price of shipping on.
Make sure if you are searching ebay to have worldwide selected, I'm sure f&f sets from the states are much cheaper.
There are also some good deals on the BMX museum sales pages. Sometimes if the seller doesn't post international, a polite message may change their mind.

Alan,
You are definitely in the right place. If you see a frameset you like but are unsure just run it by people on here first before you part with any money, should avoid getting burned that way!
Haro Masters are not hard to find but due to their popularity are rather expensive. There are also different generations of Haro Sport and Master spanning a few years so know what you are looking for. Have a good old read up on here, you will be surprised how much you learn! Oh, and don't be afraid to ask questions no matter how silly, most people here are a friendly, helpful bunch!

Thanks for the sound advice there.. what is drawing me to the haro is also what it is putting me off... relatively easy to get but some are very expensive. With so many people chasing parts I would guess any budget I have in mind should be tripled!
I have seen a few nice Burners that could perhaps be a better starting point financially.. some beautiful looking bikes. Either way I will be updating with lots of pictures!

welcome to RAD Alan - as the others have said ask any questions you like here & we'll do what we can to help you avoid getting burned. Patience is difficult but will help save you overspending.
What kind of riding are you planning to do? ramps? or just rolling about?
I started here with a haro master, but in the end got rid as a modern bike was better for ramps & it was a bit s.hort for general riding even though I'm only 5'8" (still better than a burner though

Hey Alan. Nice to have another freestyler in the ranks
Theres a really good range of weird and wonderfull freestylery about, alot of which are much more reasonable than a Master. Have a look around and maybe get your arm in with something else while you keep an eye out for a master you can work with. If you intend on riding I can highly recommend a mongoose decade. Dead comfortable and can be found for decent money.

Maybe a Haro FST would be a good option?
