White wall tyres (following on from DTTDB post)
« on: May 11, 2016, 07:27 AM »
Who rode on them BITD?  Looking at Andy's TA with black tuffs and white walls they scream early 80's to me as we all rode on them at some point.  Not sure if it was due to the only local bike shop being a Raleigh dealer and therefore having lots of shopper tyres  ;D but we all rode on them round my way at some point, they were cheap and rolled real smooth.

I can remember Mason Smith coming to Bowes in the early 80's on his Gen1 and i'm sure he rode them with black Tuffs as well, i think they look well cool on black tuffs  :smitten:

I've got some on my aero reflex purely because I thought they were cool bitd.
I remember how in my estate we all switched from snakebellies to coloured comp 3s and then we were freestyle mad so we all got whitewalls .. I think they looked cool with tuffs and arayas  :4_17_5:

Mainly due to all the bike shops at the time selling white wall shopper tyres  :daumenhoch:

Pickle your theory is correct  ;)

Thanks for starting this one Rob  :daumenhoch:
For those who didn't see my post in the London ride thread, these are the features/pics where i first saw white walls. Thought they looked really cool then, and i still like them now. Had to put them on my first BMX build (Skyway T/A), when i got back into it.

I agree that there were as close as we could get to comp st s and panaracers ...
Tempted to do a white/black ripper next ?
There was s similar looking Ripper for sale in Afflecks Palace in the the very early 90s

I had them on a few bikes as a kid but found them to be totally useless in wet weather, I agree they did look good with both tuffs and spokes.

First time I remember whitewalls on bmx's was Picketts Lock in about 83? Racing indoors on wooden ramps.

Next weekend at Rom everyone was riding with em!
When I was born, the world was a far simpler place.
It was all just cops and robbers.
And BMX.

We built up a lot of freestyle bikes with Michelin white walls when I was at Heff's but they didn't really float my boat and I preferred Comp ST's or Panaracer in black/skinwall.  Having said that I could have done with them at Earls Court as that was slippy as on Snakebellies!

White walls were the closest thing you could get to 'freestyle tyres' for cheap

Here's me and my mate back in the day ... for the life of me I can't remember his name  :-[
