Bonus Ball Raffles
« on: March 14, 2016, 02:26 PM »
Is this the way these days to sell your BMX items?

Ask a set price per person, times it by 59, leaving you with, what seems to be more than you would have got for it by placing it up for sale, and everyone is happy, right?

Although I see a lot of people asking, for what I feel, is a lot more than what the item is worth, it seems to work, doesn't it?

What are your thoughts, if any  ???

Agreed. Unfortunately, for the right items, there will be people queueing up to get a 'bargain', then probably selling it on.

I raffled my Dyno Compe, the baby blue one. £10 a go, 49 numbers, £490 back.

I donated £100 to the Macmillan Nurses, so it meant I got £390, about £60 or £70 less than it cost to build.

Hardly greedy.

There's a few sides to it.

It's hard shifting a complete but at 1/59 th of the price people will have a go

The actual winner gets a bargain.

I can see why sellers do it and why others buy the tickets

So people that are against it never take part in phone in to vote etc game shows and the like as they make profit off that.

My comment wasn't aimed at you Dan... more so that Terry said "bmx items" which I'm guessing means parts. ??? If that is the case... raffling parts for over inflated prices is taking the piss.  "nono"

Not seen a lot of it about .. But then I'm not on FB etc

I liked Dan's raffle and the raffle prize for Cleethorpes was one of my all time favourites ....
It's not always about greed.

Completes can be a pain in the arse to shift and are usually sold at a loss to the builder/owner so why not?

Raffling parts ... That is a step too far IMO... That's a different matter.

The raffle idea should be a bit of fun and a win win situation for all involved.

Just saying like ....
I guess if there's been a ton of these on FB then it would just get very tired very quick

I've nothing against it as such. The seller sets the ticket price, and if there isn't enough interest, they have the right to either refund or wait until every ticket is sold.  You buy your ticket and take your chance, but obviously the odds are massively stacked against you. If you do win, I think it's upto you what you do with it regarding splitting etc. Why should you feel guilty? If your asking price for the individual parts is too high, they won't sell.  Everyone has paid the same amount per ticket, and the draw is fair, so it's not like there has been behind the scenes dealings/sob stories trying to knock the asking price down for a complete (didn't this happen at MK the year before last?) - Someone giving a cock & bull story about his son wanting a bike, and it then appeared on ebay the same week. I don't know the precise details, but it sounded dodgy. Bad form within a community such as ours  "nono"

Not sure I would go down the raffle route, but it can be a good way to shift a complete as Dan plus a few others like Paul and Gaz H have done. They also made a complete or partial contribution to a local charity/good cause. Hats off to them  :4_17_5:, although it's upto the individual why they want to sell/what they do with the proceeds

I have joined a few Old School BMX Facebook pages today - can't quite believe what I am witnessing.

The raffling of Old School BMX's has turned into an epidemic.

How can people be asking for a combined monitory value via 59 tickets - which actually surpasses the value of the bike, even if split!!!???

An example witnessed today - a £200 bike, 59 tickets sold for £10 = £590.00 - Less £100.00 charity donation = a bike valuation of £490.00. You could not split this particular bike twice and expect to bring in £490.00 for it.

Thinly disguising the blatant profiteering by giving a token gesture % to charity does not cut it for me.

Its a disgrace  :(
