Totally agree, since you keep the original machining marks, but I didn't fancy the additional expense of that on a stem I hadn't actually planned to use initially

He removed it too, think he sanded it off, rather than chemically though

Cheers that's what I was wondering.

Happy enough with the finish, especially considering how I got it. And all the bolts are the same ones

I think that purchase has done you proud

Terry I like doing things myself if I can but always stayed clear of dodgy chromed parts as thought they were to much pain in the arse to do.

I just wanted to clear up how this was done.

The nearest chromers to me is miles away and I prefer to drop things off to explain. With that it all adds up to big £££

Anyway back to the GT

Good old sunstrip doing the hard work.

And everything raw /even the black brake, once I realised they were anodized rather than paint.

So now everything is en route to SBD for some special powder coating.

Well it arrived today in Sweden from SBD and what can I say!!!

And just to show how good SBD is... Here's a comparison on the new powder to a NOS set of 1986 Dayglow Pink GT Performer bars.

Time to have a go at lacing up and truing the wheels.

Took a couple of efforts to get the pattern right but got it sorted:

Then it was time to MacGyver a truing stand, from a Trickstar and three lollipop sticks.

And mounted to some GT rubber

Next up, the Nippon that was originally anodized black got the SBD treatment. (Still need to have the QR mounted again)

Ran into a bit of a problem though with the rear frame Standers.

Test fitted them, and they won't sit fluch to the drop out when mounted... bit of tweaking to do, so I dont mess up the powder coat on the frame.

That's all I managed today, but couldnt resist to see how the wheel looked on.

I don't fancy trashing the powder coat, but the gap is pretty huge. I also think rather than pull the stander in when tightened, it will have the effect that it will rotate up off the chain stay instead.

Anyway, I managed to solve it and keep the powder intact (on the bike and frame stander)

It actually needed a little precision engineering to get it sorted.

So here's the problem...

With the frame stander sitting on the chainstay the gap to the drop out was about a centimetre. I tried two different sets and the problem was the same for both.

So I figured if I can widen the part that sits on the chain stay, it should sit flush, or at least sit closer to be able to tighten it down. So time to use that precision engineering to widen it.

Meet the Persuader...

Just a block of wood and a mallet.

Hand -> Mallet -> Block of wood -> FrameStander -> ThickRag -> Corner of workbench

Did it in small steps to get it to the point it sat flush

Frame stander on the Left is has the original shape, the one on the Right is widened.

Thankfully the powder didn't chip or crack and now it all sits like it should.

Nice to hear, always fun to document the builds... Although progress has been a bit slow due to the demands of a 1 and 3 year old lol
