When You're Planning A Build, Do Any Of You...
« on: February 14, 2016, 11:21 AM »
...ever look at anyone else's bike in the Museum section or Me & My Bikes for inspiration?

I do this with most of my builds, although I do have a mental image of what I want to build and parts I'll need, but I find it helps if I've already seen something close, already built.

2 I can remember off the top of my head are Nathan (Macmania's) Silver Streak and I've Got A Burner's Robinson.

Anyone else do something similar?

Yeah I've done this with the GT I'm building Dan.
Then it gives yourself a good idea what the bits will look like before you go out and purchase them.
I looked through the Museum for a Blue GT with white Brake cable but couldn't find any then I spotted Carls Hutch Judge which is Blue & has a white cable and it looks spot on.
So it just goes to show a bit of research can help you out along the way  :daumenhoch:

I don't ... it's much easier to navigate and find a specific model on their museum than ours unfortunately. ???
Add it to faves then it's there for future reference and throughout your build process... however long that may be.  :daumenhoch:

Good advice Nick, I don't know why I've never thought of doing it tbh.

When I was 12 I didn't have a museum to look at. I just throw shit at a frame until I'm happy. Hence why my builds are a bit marmite. But I love them.

I do the same look at the Museum sections here and the USA. Also gives you confirmation if what you are thinking is going to look right.  :)

For my latest build (83 quad ) I've looked on here, the museum, google images and oldschoolmags.com to get  a sense of factory specs, era correctness and what balance of coloures/parts works best  :daumenhoch:
As always the research on a build and making the right decisions is half the fun :daumenhoch:

I'm not sure I specifically look at other bikes for inspiration, as I've got a fairly good idea of what I want to do in my head, but I definitely look at other bikes to see what the combination of parts and colours actually looks like when built. Not sure that makes sense but I get it! :crazy2:

Most of my builds come from memory, old articles and photos.

The problem I find with a lot (not all) modern builds is that they're faddish - you certainly find that on FB. One person promotes something as desirable and then every wally is wanting the same part irregardless of suitability.

But, to answer your question Dan, I don't often look at bikes in the museum sections for inspiration but I do look at them to feel good, kinda like looking at the pictures in a deck of Trumps as a kid  :)

If I come across, or I am offered a frame set I really like, I picture how I want to build it from knowledge of the parts that I know of, and looking through magazines for era correct parts. I pretty much know what colour scheme would suit a frame set, it's kind of 'in you', if that makes it sense.

Not really no, if it's a replica of a racers bike then he's I'll do my research but if it's just a frame set I usually just wing it and hope for the best.

I tend to look at the museum builds, to get an idea of colours or particular parts that may look good, or look totally shite :)

I do, but i look in the bmxmuseum.com bikes section. Much easier to navigate and more user friendly than the museum on rad. Can it be changed to the same format as the one on the museum?

It probably could, but doubt it will.

There was talk of alphabetising the museum on here, but it would take up too much time for the Mod's to do.

I've based my Trident build on the feature that was in (i think) BMX Bi-Weekly many years ago.. chrome f&f with black components .

I just look what i have in the man cave and throw it on, usually stick to the 3 colours rule (one being chrome) and it seems to work.
I don't have a big budget for building so use what i have.
I like my bikes to be a bit different from everyone else's  so 100% spec is not really my thing.  ;)
