GT Tour 2 resto
« on: January 02, 2016, 10:44 AM »
Hi all HAPPY NEW YEAR! Im startin my GT project and will be posting pics and askin questions along the way.
So I got this off ebay a couple of weeks ago havent had too much time to mess with it but every spare minute i have im gettin dirty lol.
I have stripped everything down and am going to give everything a clean down today and if i have enough time left will strip the paint off the frame too.
My plan was to get all the chrome stuff blasted off but so many people keep sayin "give it a bath" so i am going to bath it then paint over the chrome.
As for colour scheme.... well i have been deliberatin but have defo made my mind up now. Im gonna match the colours off the decals. Brilliant white on the forks, bars and cranks with the frame, seat post, rims, hubs and spokes in black. I was gonna go with some gold touches but have now decided to go with blue bits instead because if down the line i want to get the og decals on then it would math in real nice.

Here it is as i got it

And here all stripped i have now removed the headset cups too

Will post later on when ive done some work  ;D

Thanks Dee
Well i got a bit done 2day but time got cut short.
Cleaned out the bottom bracket.
Gave the chainring and stem a quik wipe they arent going on this bike so wasnt too worried about them gonna put thm on my chrome dyno.
Then whacked some nitromors on the frame and wow is that paint is tuff! I have stripped a lot of paint in my time (being a decorater) but that was hard work....
But at least i got some off  :LolLolLolLol: I have just had a bit of a rub and it looks like it should come up good so all in all not too bad just wish i had more time.
Anyone tried stripping frame paint with a heat gun? Seems like it might work better and i cant see it causing any issues as long as im careful?
Hers some pics

This is a recent addition to the forum.....it's a reference to long respected member Spen69 who is apparently slightly 'vertically challenged'  :daumenhoch:

Cool....I forgot to say the heat gun wouldn't of been a problem although usually unnecessary!
Are you going to repowder the frame or paint it? looking forward to progress!

Im going to paint it going black again. The og paint was fooked so had to take it off and the nitromors was poo i did 4 coats it was on for about 2 hours and the paint was barley soft! I have done nitromors on loads of stuff tons of radiators etc and its worked real well but not this time..... Not gonna get anymore done today the mrs is ill so i gotta look after the little man so looks like ill have to wait for weekend  :( but on the bright side think like ive found a black piston stem, im gonna order a few bits today while i got time and gonna get ready to give the chrome a bath!
As for the paint im gonna go for the plastikote stuff I saw a thread about painting over chrome and somebody said this stuff was good for that too so im gonna look into it.

Apparently Nitromors is not what it used to be....although has always worked o.k for me. Starchem Synstrip is the way to go   :daumenhoch:

Ok bit of an update. Not managed to get a whole lot done this weekend  :( but did get a bit more stripped off and gave the stripped side a very quick rub down. On the bright side i did manage to get the freewheel off and strip the back wheel. I also managed to dig out a primo brake lever, odyssey u brake and an old gt seat.
Some of the parts i had ordered arrived too Freewheel, Alex rims and Snafu gyro (a bit new skool but i like it).
Also had a bit of a result finding a matching left hand lever which i was so happy about but the happiness didnt last too long as i forgot the bars are super thick aaaaarghhhh! So a lot of filing later and the right hand one is nearly there but i will now have to do the other too when it arrives.
I am going to give the chrome a bath 2moz will take before and afters of that.

Ok so i gave the chrome a bath got some pics before and afters. Its come up ok all i wanted was to get the rust off as im painting em anyway which has worked a treat. The cranks arms havent got much chrome left so they are gonna need a good prep before paint and the rest i gave a quick clean removing as much rust as i could find but will be going over them again. Was wondering if its worth using a rust treatment on the pitted areas to ensure there is no rust under there before painting?
