Brazed bars?
« on: January 01, 2016, 03:32 PM »
Me and Steve Animal were chatting about these bars at MK, before the rust set in, and we reckon they are brazed.

Now that they are going rusty, there is no rust on the 'welds' at all.

Does that say they are definitely brazed?

They will be generic then I reckon, the brazing isn't high quality like Curtis  :daumenhoch:

You said that at MK. What makes you so sure Steve?

Looking at the brazing on Griffs cruiser, it's a lot more uniform and neater than on these bars  :-\

If they are Curtis, then I'm fookin happy  :daumenhoch:

Most likely they are Rickman made bars. What are the dimensions?

IIRC they are 28x10, without going out to measure them.

They could be Curtis, but that's definitely not Brian's brazing. Which again, would mean they're Rickman made.

I've just measured them. They are 28 1/2 by 8 1/2 approx.

Another couple of pics.

Yep the flat style bars in the Rickman ad I posted are 725mm or 28 1/2" wide. and they look right to me. Some had a stamp or serial number on one end. Have you seen one on these?

Brian never braized bars. Others did hence the difference .

Of course Brian made and brazed bars. He designed and fab'd the original pro bars with the high cross brace. He told me that himself. He even admitted that they were shit lol. Not the design, but the fact that they were also made using the same guage T45 tubes as the frames, which is inherently soft and doesn't cope well with being clamped by a stem. Hence why when he makes bars now he uses 4 pieces of tube allowing him to use a thicker walled tube for the bottom of the bars.

That braizing is identical to mine on all my bars made at Rickman . I can see the same person welded most . I would assume a less experienced welder  :daumenhoch:

I had a set of these cw bars which came on a Curtis expert that i sourced back in 2011.

I sent an e-mail & some pics to Curtis bikes to try to find out if they made them.

Here it is ,   good old search box  :daumenhoch:

Hi,
I wondered if you can take a minute to read this as im trying to find out if you made these handlebars back in the 80s.
These type of bars were originally made by an American company called CW racing and they called the bars CW's .
The bars i have in the picture came on a Curtis expert which i have restored and have your Curtis stickers on, I thought that these were just added to them for looks?
What makes them different to many other copy CW bars is that these have brazed welds rather than tig weld.
I also have a small Rickman bmx brochure from the 80s which shows these bars on there product list, i wondered if Rickman made them for you as they also used brazed welds on their frames and bars.
It would be really good if we could find out who produced these brazed CW bars back in the 80s,
As Curtis are renowned for their quality frame building it would be nice to single these out from the many other copy CW's from the 80s in circulation as there are very few brazed ones so it would nice to put a name or maker to bars.
Appreciate your time and look forward in hearing back .
Many thanks scott.

Hi scott ,
The bars you have are original curtis pro bars for sure , Brian ( mr Curtis ) also made all the rickman frames which is why they are brazed as well .
I would love to see the old Rickman brochure you have .

Regards

Gary.

I sold them on ebay soon after listed as Curtis made cw bars ..

The reply is from Gary woodhouse who works there, but im not sure if he was there in the 80's and im still not convinced that its Brians welding on these bars as said above .

I've an identical set,

They could be Rickman or Curtis as I don't think there were too many others out there brazing & yes in the most part the Rickman bars did have the part number stamped in them but not in all cases.

i have some go bars with the part number & some without,  I guess they simply got missed..  :daumenhoch: :Great_Britain:
