More from Kellogg's 1985
« on: December 29, 2015, 08:29 PM »
I had the chance to raid my mother's house over Christmas, to find the rest of the photos my dad and I took at the Kellogg's Frosties competition in 1985. I posted the racing pics yesterday, here are the freestyle including more of Neil Ruffell.

Second set. Remember these are pretty low quality scans, the original prints are better.

Last pics. I think this is the lot from Kellogg's but I have some other non-Kelloggs pics around.

These are all fantastic pics bro...thanks again for sharing. Those quarter pipes look thin and sketchy as hell! Who was that in the Raleigh kit? Andy Ruffell? nice style and fooking brave if he was on a Burner!!  :daumenhoch:

I think the photographer standing on top of the quarter pipe was really brave! If memory serves they draped the sides of the pipes with some sort of material for the final, as it looked better on TV.

As for the guy in Raleigh gear, I am sure it's not a Burner but I don't recall who the rider was.  I will scan the detail of his helmet in a bit, see if anyone can identify him.

The guy in the Raleigh outfit....here is a detail of his helmet. Definitely says "Ron".....Wilkerson? Though why he would have been wearing Raleigh gear is a bit of a mystery. Maybe someone borrowed his helmet or maybe it is a different Ron. Any ideas?

Ron won the freestyle final. It's definitely his helmet but why would he be in Raleigh gear?

I remember well that Neil did a lot of aerial tricks which were edited out of the TV broadcast.

On the day, the crowd were....umm...less than appreciative of the victor. We were instructed by the TV presenter (Anthony Pirrie???) to cheer again for the cameras and to "really freak out". We declined and they actually cut in applause from the semi final for the broadcast. I think on the day we all felt Neil had won it but we might just have been a partisan audience.

Amazing!! nothing you ever see on TV is how it actually was....even back then !
Ron W must of nicked a shirt of Andy Ruff for practice!

Ron borrowing a shirt from Andy Ruffell makes sense.

I know the crowd wanted Neil to win and it's 30 years ago...but my recollection is that Neil was a good deal more spectacular than the edited version that was broadcast....I remember thinking "where are all the aerials?" I don't think it was as clear cut as it looks on the TV show (it's on Youtube) but maybe we just wanted Neil to win because we were partisan.

I do distinctly remember a bit of a shockwave going through the crowd as the judges revealed their scores, we clearly expected Neil to win or perhaps a tie.

I'm guessing Jason Lunn borrowing Ron's helmet. Also Ron Wilkerson airs to the right.

Thing that always makes me laugh about the old vids/comps is that dropping in was considered a trick!!

My recollection of the day is that the crowd generally felt that the freestyle final was fixed in Ron's favour. There had been some concern over one of the judges giving lower scores than the others. I think it was Mason Smith who was the judge in question but if he scored everyone low it wouldn't make it unfair for anyone.

The feeling in the crowd, certainly where I was, was that it was fixed for an American to win and that poor Neil was never really in with a chance.

But who knows? Maybe we were just caught up in a bit of patriotism. I doubt the original unedited tapes still exist but they certainly edited the broadcast to better reflect the result.

Ant and Andy will be straight on to eBay looking for some of those Oakley braces.

I am lovin' those braces ....  :LolLolLolLol: do they do them in hot pink?  ::)

On a serious note these pictures are amazing !! There must be very few pictures of the Kellogg's around in general.
The quality of these pictures is incredible.
I'm sure Andy Ruffell would like to see these rare pictures of his brother?
Does anybody know him on FB to pass on that they are on here?

The whole of these sets of pictures would make a great book ... They are all gems that have been hidden for a long time !
Thanks so much for sharing these in here.

The behind the scenes info is also a real revalation ...
Alledgedly there was also more than smell of fixing associated with the U.S. King of the skatepark series ....

I guess that's the way of the world whenever there is money and sponsors involved >:(

Doesn't Andy Ruffell have his own company these days? I could possibly contact him as his details should be available from Companies House, if people think he'd be interested. Or if anyone has an email address for Andy I'd happily send him better quality scans.

I am still looking for my note book that I took to the Kellogg's competition. I collected loads of autographs from the top guys including Andy & Neil Ruffell, Eddie Fiola (difficult, he was moody), etc. And a lot of the big names in racing such as Harry Leary, Geth Shooter (was there when be beat the yanks) and so on.

The book and photos together would make a good scrap book type project :)
