Schwinn scrambler
« on: March 04, 2006, 11:35 AM »
Does anyone have any pics of a 1977 Scwhinn scrambler. Preferable with close ups or even better, scans of the decals. Google only comes up with 2 pics of the correct era bike, but not good quality. Thanks guys. Ad

Yup that's mine. As I am new to bike restoration/history, I would appreciate any and all info you have on this bike. Serial number (KR 55xxxx) indicates it was manufactured in Oct 1980 (from a website I found).  Some (dumb) questions I have, I hope you can help...

1- If this bike was manufactured in Oct 1980 (serial KR 55xxxx from ebay description) would this appear in the 1980 or 1981 Schwinn catalog?
2- Where can I find the 1981 Schwinn catalog on the internet? I located the 1980/1982 at http://genesbmx.bmxair.com/schwinn/catalogs/bmx.html but I'd love to find the 1981 catalog somewhere.
3- Is this bike a Scrambler or a Phantom Scrambler?  What's the difference?
4- Can you tell if those chrome handlebars are original ?

Again, thanks and any info you could provide would help me a great deal :)

You know, this bike looks like an '82 model, due to the frame geometry under the seatpost. Not sure why the serial number indicates an earlier model.

More pictures of this bike now that I received it...

Questions for the group:

1) did the 82 Scramblers always come with chrome handlebars? Or was black the only choice?
2) do the cranks look original?
3) do those grips look original?
4) seat original?

Final question is how hard is it to disassemble the wheel hubs, bearings etc? I really would like to degrease all that and get new grease in there.

I know nothing of Schwinn Scramblers, but from those pictures you posted and the advert it looks all original, even if the bars & stem (neck) are chrome.

It even looks to have original tyres and reflectors

It's a nice looking ride if you ask me although not a 'proper' BMX (notice the kick-stand mount under the chainstay bracket).

do you suppose it's possible that when the bike was purchased, the owner requested chrome instead of black? I mean, was that something you could request?
