Hi guys...
Am new to the forum and it's a fantastic community you have here.

Anyway I picked up a rather shabby looking Mongoose article over the weekend. It's far from vintage as it's 2010 but it's clearly not been stored well and plenty of parts have rusted over. I plan to replace the majority of parts if need be, but the frame is solid and that's a good start.

I was wondering where is best for buying replacement bolts? Would I need to get specific ones for specific parts or can I buy a bulk lot from somewhere that covers most areas of the bike?

For example the bolts on the brake levers... They are very rusty and would prefer to replace with new shiny ones.. Where is best for these and how do I know which to buy?

All the bits you need will be in standard sizes. Take the ones you want to replace to a fastener stockist. There's at least one in every town (google it)
Failing that, remove the rust and brush them all up nice again using citric or oxalic acid solution. There's plenty of guidance for that in rad's "technical and resto" section.
Bolt-set packs are available but only usually contain the main ones (stem, crank axle, brake lug and wheelnuts)

As said, best off just taking all the old ones to a fastener specialist and matching them. Or just upgrade the components with the rusty nuts/bolts. New BMX stuff is fairly cheap compared with the old stuff.....get some pics up..you will needa photobucket/ imageshack account or similar . What are you intending to do with the bike?

Thanks guys. I have been to a few local places today but no joy. I will try and find out the exact size and name of the bolt and maybe get off ebay.

When I was a kid I restored old motorbikes with my dad and learned a lot about patience and tools... My lad has taken an interest in bmx and would rather he got involved in then than motorbikes like I did! Roads seem more dangerous these days.

I want to get this mongoose back to a safe and rideable condition for us both to enjoy. I am aiming to get all of the original parts for it too and strip it back and clean it all and lube it up. If I can't find original bits then I will get as close as I can for now

I am looking for a Raleigh Burner to have as a main project too as I never had one as a child and always wanted one. So to bring one in whatever condition and bring it up to mint condition would be great.

I buy cheap brakesets off ebay. I use the spindles, bolts etc and discard the arms. Some branches of Wilkinsons have a pick n mix screw/bolt/washer section where you can fill a bag with as much as you like for £1.99
