Please help with my Sugino OPC and Odyssey Bottom Bracket!
« on: October 08, 2015, 04:39 PM »
Hi all,

I've nearly finished my first build in 30 years, but one thing is bothering me:

If I spin the pedals while the bike is on a bike repair stand, the crank and pedals only turn for around 1-2 revolutions before stopping. Is this right or should it revolve freely more times than that?

The reason I ask is that I couldn't fix the whole lot together if I used the spacer washer.

As u can see in this photo, there are the 2 cups and bearings, 2 Odyssey cup seals, the locking ring, a large spacer washer and the securing nut.

And as you can see in this photo, the non drive side is fixed without the spacer washer.

Is this ok or is this why the crank is not spinning properly??

I just couldn't get it all together when the spacer washer was in place and I tried for about 30 mins!

Sorry if this is a stoopid question but everyone's gotta start somewhere!

Cheers guys :daumenhoch:

Try putting the washer on first so it sits against the spider then fit the locking nut.  :daumenhoch:

So the washer SHOULD be on there?
Do you mean on the drive side?
Or on the side of the last photo?
In between the 2 nuts, so to speak ;)

Put your spider on the crank then the spacer then just do what you did before. :daumenhoch:

get 2 thin spanners that fit the locking nut and the cone nut, tighten the cone nut just enough so that the cranks spin freely then screw the locknut up to the cone nut finger tight. get the 2 spanners on both nuts and unscrew the cone nut till it's tight to the locknut. if there's any play in the cranks you may have to adjust them slightly by doing the exact same but slightly over tightening the cone nut first.

Are bottom brackets like headsets and you can put the bearing races in the wrong way round?
Looking at the pic it appears to me that the bearings are upside down. I could be wrong.

No that's just how they came in the packaging.
I'm 99% sure I put them the right way round, this photo shows I deffo got it right on the drive side!

I've just called Odyssey direct and they have confirmed that the washer should go on drive side between spider and locking nut ;)
Thanks for all your help :daumenhoch:

You should have a washer on BOTH sides. One near the spider and a tabbed one on the non drive side. The reason it is tightening up is you don't have the tabbed washer on the non drive side which is allowing both nuts to moved around the thread on the crank and tighten. Placing the tabbed washer BETWEEN the nuts will stop it tightening.

Like the people said, the big washer will go on the drive side. Could be left out if you need more thread room on the other side.
The small, keyed washer fits into the alcove on the first non drive side nut, then the outer nut tightens it up.

Had to leave the large spacer washer out, there wasn't enough thread on the non drive side so thanks for saying that could be done, I can rest easy now!
