89 Haro Master bashguard
« on: October 08, 2015, 12:34 PM »
I've nothing better to do and nothing more constructive to spend my money on I've decided to build another bike.  This came up and I always loved the look of these so I decided to give it a home.  Obviously this isn't an original colour so I think I'm going to have it powdered black.  I've got bars, seat post, seat and peg standers making their way to me and I think I'm just gonna throw what ever bits I've got laying around on it so I can ride it until all the right parts come along.

One thing that is puzzling me though is how the hell do you fit the bash plate???

I think you have the wrong bash plate for that model mate  :-[

I have a 90 master and bash plate, and the plate holes match up with the frame holes.

One thing I've struggled with is getting bolts for the fooker!

It's been suggested that the original riv-nuts have been pulled out and the holes filled.  I'm going to take the frame to the power coaters and have it blasted back to bare so I can see what's going on under the paint.  Maybe re-drill and fit new riv-nuts before powder coating it again.

I can't even find a picture on google of the bolts that are needed for the original bash plate.  Put one up if you can find it.

Can clearly see filler where the bash plate should mount!

Looks like they have tried to mount it several times so i expect there will be several holes once you strip the paint off

Think it will be a case of welding up the holes and re drilling for the bash plate

Cracking pictures Kev, I can see what I'm aiming for at least now.  My bashplate is a sorry state though!!!  I'll be collecting the striped down frame tomorrow to see what it's like.

If my memory serves me right isn't the bash plate metal?

If so and you cant find one for sale you can get someone like http://www.southernclassics.co.uk/bodywork-panel-beating/ to  repair yours or fabricate you a new one

i used to have an 89 bashy bitd and ended up making my own bash plate from a thick yellow gas pipe. it would grind a lot faster.

Not to hijack your thread, but if anyone knows what size bolts I need for a 90 bash plate it would really help  :daumenhoch:

Yep but the holes the bolts go through are mashed and mis-shaped.  Gonna need some wide headed bolts to hold it on.

You don't know that for sure!!  If I actually learn to grind then I'll be sliding that sucker down some coping at least once  ;D

think  the bolts are 1/8 or 3/16  (metric would be 4mm / 5mm)  may be wrong,  best thing was to knock out the brass insert and tap the hole to an m8 and use a stem bolt and a bigger fatter washer stop the bashy plate ripping off  :daumenhoch:

rough brick ledges were always the best on a bashy ,  usually went one of two ways

the bashy would snag n dig in ripping it  clean off this one you could usually ride away from  :daumenhoch: or

the bashy would snag n dig in not ripping off, flipping you over the bars,  not so easy to ride away from  :LolLolLolLol:

Picked it back up from shot blasting the other day so here's what we're dealing with now.....

What do you think the best way to go is here?  Originally I was thinking drilling and riv-nuts but the guy I was going to get to do that for me is saying it would be better welding nuts on then screwing the bolt into them?  I'm not too sure about that to be fair?  I take it the should be a few ml of clearance from the frame so that the bashguard isn't actually in contact with the frame??

For you Olly here's the side shot of the forks.......

They're not the right forks are they??

Yeah, hadn't really looked until you asked to see a closer picture.  just got back in touch with the seller.  Not happy about that at all.  Asked for part refund or full refund on return.  I don't think he intentionally mislead me but it's certainly not what I've paid for.  Gutted, I was really excited about this one.
