Choices?
« on: August 18, 2015, 09:54 AM »
So, new OM Flyer arrived, 26inch wheels and my first V-brake bike.

Brake is a Tektro and looks and feels a bit cheap and nasty. What are my upgrade choices?

Do I have to stick to a V-brake or change to a U-brake or are they not interchangeable and what are the advantages/disadvantages?

If I buy a new V-brake, are the ones from bmx shops going to fit seeing as the wheels are that much bigger, or am i looking at a mountain bike fit?

V and U brakes have mounts in different places.

Tektro are not bad brakes to be honest.

Those Clarkes are superb!  I've got one on my Ripper and it rips your spine out when you pull the lever.

On my Floval i'm running an old Avid Arch rival as i like the look of them and they are super powerful.

If it's just the look of the Tektro you don't like then go for something like a Shimano DXR which are pretty cheap compared to the Clarkes

The clarks are a bit steep for my liking, Shimano much more affordable. I notice Dia Compe do an MX2 v-brake too which is anodised so can match into colour scheme better.

Cheers fellas.  8)

I ended up going for the MX2's purely for the looks. Turns out they work superbly. Ditched the front brake altogether and fitted the MX2 V-brake and matching lever. Amazing braking - makes you realise how bad the initial (Tektro) setup was.

I changed the mushrooms to A'me grips too. I didn't like the look of the white/red combo much and they made the palms of my hands itch whenever I got some speed up. I remember this happening when I bought a pair of mushrooms when they first came out. Soon ditched them for A'me's too. Got the lot from Alans for £30.

As it was:

Got the set (front and rear) from CRC in their sale.  £80 instead of £200+

They are nice but looked a bit modern for the old fashioned stylings of the OM. The DCs work well and look stylish to me (each to their own eh). Having never used v-braked I wasn't sure whether I could swap with u-brakes etc.

I like the looks of the Odyssey A brakes too but have never seen them before. All this modern stuff is beyond me.

May have to change some of the red bits to blue to balance it up a bit. I bloody love riding this, had some good comments too.
