Birmingham WHEELS magazine track test

Just posted this on the book of face... I can't quite believe this but i've just been sent a Birmingham WHEELS 'track test' magazine review from 1985. Here are a few grabs of the pics included in the article. Unfortunately it is in Dutch so i'll get it translated, but this is the first time i've seen pictures of black WHEELS pads, although i knew they made them. Also nice to see how the original decals were fitted. Looks like a 'Pro' frame with the tall seat post tube. LOVE the plate!!

The Wheels track was the first I ever visited as a kid , awesome place. I can remember shitting myself as we drove through Bordesly Green , it was like Calcutta!
Is the wheels track still there?

That parts list is interesting too. Wasn't ASCO a Dutch brand? If so, were the ASCO parts put on for the benefit of the Dutch readers or were they standard issue?

From what I gather the dealer P.v. HOOF who partially ran the Dutch arm of the team as well as importing the bikes built them up and marketed them, so I am not surprised to see 'standard' Dutch parts being used. In fact from what I gather there were frame supply issues and said dealer was known to decal up 'other' frames as BW and sell them on. I have seen one such frame. Will try to find a pic. This is why all of the surviving original decal and padsets originate from over there...

Here we go. This is a 'Pro Winner' frame (Belgian brand I believe?) badged as a Brum WHEELS frame by PV HOOF. This came directly from an ex-BW Dutch team member and is as sold.

That's interesting Martin...
So how can you tell a genuine BW from a Dutch imposter? Just serials? Or any other clues?

It's a completely different frame design. All of the telltale BW features (brazed welds, small bar between the looptails behind the BB, excessive looptails etc...) are all absent, plus as you say, the serial number. I'd be able to tell just by looking at it.

It's no better now
the best bit being St andrews
I went the old wheels track with jase (sweetbeats)about 6 years back,but the track was just overgrown and neglected,think we found an old wheels sign, did a thread on it but it may have been lost in the crash,I think Birmingham bmx club might have tried to get something  going from there before they went to Perry Barr,it's mainly known  for go karting  now
