I had my first go at an indoor skatepark at the weekend and I loved it, I was riding a 1997 Haro Zippo. The bike was ok, but someone let me have a go on a modern Haro 500.1 and this felt so much better than my bike.

I want to keep the zippo for ride outs and get a more modern bike for park riding.

So what would be a good starter bike? Could I get something half decent for £100-200? The lads that I spoke to at the park, told me to get a second hand one as there's some real bargains to be had.

I really know nothing about newer bikes and need putting in the right direction.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Wethepeople arcades come up proper cheap, great all rounders. Don't get swayed by people banding around the phrase custom regarding new school, changing the pedals grips and seat on a stock complete doesn't make it a custom and worth more, in fact most of the time they take a stock bike and put wänk xposure parts on it in bright colours, a custom new school is built from a frame you can only buy as a frame, but you do find them dressed in stock parts from a complete where some lad has just bought a frame

Steve, £100 will buy a lot of secondhand new school bike mate for trying in a skatepark

Most new school rides around £350-400 end up on ebay for a ton or less and usually the yoof can't be arsed to post them, so set your eBay search for a radius you are prepared to drive and keep and eye out for something.

Look for as much cromo in the frame as possible and branded parts. If you spot something, put a link up and we'll give you a nod if it's any good

cracking brand mate, make really nice bikes, should be able to get a 3-5 year old one in budget.
Look at FIT as well, basically S&M

Steve I suggest you blag a few goes on other bikes and note the geometry to see how you get on with the them

For instance my Wethepeople Zodiac is a 20.75" tt but a slammed 13" rear so it is pretty snappy, my park Retrogoose is a 21" tt and 14" rear so a little more sluggish and finally my race Retrogoose was a 21.5" tt and 14.5" rear so terrible on a quarter pipe but sweet on a track.......

What I'm saying is in this instance, an extra half inch can make all the difference

I can't remember the fellas name, but a lad let me ride his Haro 500.1 on Saturday and that felt really nice.

Look up the geometry on their website and there's your start point mate. Definitely try a few others - I'd lend you my Wethepeople Zodiac while I'm on holiday but I'm taking it with me unfortunately $:-\$
