Hi from an old Rom regular
« on: June 29, 2015, 09:48 PM »
Hi all!

Ive just joined the forum after popping in quite often and having a nose.  Ive always had a passion for bmx starting in 1982, I'm now 42.  Ive still got all my magazines starting in 1982 to about the mid 90's.  My bike I still have with is a GT World Tour Performer form I thin 1985.  It needs restoring but i got it out of my mums shed at the weekend and now I'm raring to go to get it back to how it used to be, its sad to see some rust on it but just surface rust so should be ok!
I used to virtually  live over Rom skatepark in the 80's, there everyday in the school holidays.  I have amazing memories of seeing Craig Cambell, Carlo Griggs and Jess Dyrenforth riding over there and feel privileged to have been around during the golden age of bmx.
I was the last one riding in my group, but it wasn't quite the same on my own but still carried on for a few years even while taking up the sport of bodybuilding which I became successful at!
Anyway I won't waffle on any more but look forward to my time on here and getting advice on restoration and getting my bike stripped and powder coated!

Peter

Welcome Aboard Peter  :daumenhoch:

My advice would be not to rush to quickly into a full resto ... lets some some 'survivor' pics first :-)

Every full resto I have done I ended up regretting as it killed all the soul that a proper survivor has  :daumenhoch:

Lets see the ol girl  8) 8) 8) 8)

welcome to RAD Peter, sounds like you'll know a few ROM regulars on here.  As Ed says, lets see some pictures of your GT in all it's rusty splendour  :daumenhoch:

I've added a picture above (well I've added 3 times now cant seem to delete 2 of them!)
It makes sense actually as restoring can kill the soul so I'll have a good think, might end up just giving it a good clean up.  Thanks!

Thanks, yes I probably do but I can't remember any names from back in the day.  One of my group added up being a world champ but can't remember his name either, old age creeping in I think! Lol

pics edited ... you have just added the same attachment 3 times ...  :daumenhoch:

I LOVE seeing bikes like that ... great contrast to the bling bling.

Tidy it up a bit and bring it to MK as is before you go to town on it  :daumenhoch:

I think MK may be a good shout!

This is how it came out of the shed, it had a quick clean after but the more you guys mention it I may just give it a proper clean and see how it goes.

Now I'm looking at Skyway TA's as I always wanted one,  damn....

Sorry to keep going on! but less is more ... keep the Faze 7 sticker ( I had the same one on my helmet! ) and the grip tape ... thats got mega SOUL points :-)

Theres a new category for rider / survivor bikes as well at MK so get it rolling and get it on show :-)

I so wish I'd left this as it was ... its just so much cooler!

I over restored the soul clean out of it ... so I sold it!

Please dont touch that bike, over restored examples are two a penny but rides with that sort of history are thin on the ground  :daumenhoch:

I would rather buy it from you so you could buy a replacement than advise you on stripping it  :(
Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

You guys have convinced me, its getting cleaned up but thats it.  This forum has been the nuts already, cheers! I see what you mean, they do lose they're soul once fully restored.  The bikes looked so much better back then compared to the bikes today.
Thats Street Beat is cool,  my short list was the World Tour Performer, Street Beat, Haro Master, but I was a big fan of Fiola so the Gt won!
