I've heard that welding rod is a good replacement...i'm about to restore some of mine. there's caps on ebay at the moment if you need any
ok, one suggestion... i used to work for Stuart Turner pumps many years ago and have a fair knowledge of the stuff they did for their line of model steam engines. Long story short, Stuart Models, now in Bridport, do a range of stainless steel rod.. eg 3/32 , 1/8 and upwards . About £4.50 for a 12 inch rod. feel sure this may be preferable to welding rod ??http://www.stuartmodels.com/products/fittings--tools---accessories/materialshope this is of use.
