Me and my mates had always been doing wheelies on whatever 2 wheeled device we could find. I'd also vaguely heard of this BMX idea and then one day mum came back from the local corner shop. She told me about the owners son who had just been sponsored for doing stunts on his bike. A few days later I bought a copy BMX Action Bike from that shop and the owner, Alec, said "my son's in that magazine".

So I guess that pic of Craig Campbell airing at night in Rom's bowl. Also Mr Stupple at Rad City is another iconic photo for me.

Another memory is seeing someone doing backhops and an endo outside my house, that was a revelation that made me think "I can do that, it looks fun".

Unwhittingly I got into 'bmx' before bmx or freestyle was around.
I used to do tricks on my trike which ultimately got me into bmx eventually. My fave was I used to tip my trike onto 2 wheels and go along for ages, ahhh great memories.. and here's me and the said trike!

I had my first BMX bike in like 1975 or so and since I was just a kid it was more like something you just had to have.  Although I learned to wheelie across the school yard, jump stuff, bunnyhop, kickout, wheelie with a single barspin it wasn't really called freestyle.  After a haitus for a few years that included some skating, I came back to BMX after seeing my friend and fellow Curb Dog Marc Babus do a smooth no brake 360 rollout.  I was like "yeah. that's cool.  I used to ride those things."  I didn't know anything about superstars or Bob Haro or anything but that looked fun and there was a Webco with Tuffs  in Tommy Guerrero's garage that wasn't getting ridden and we knew that people went out to GG park to ride.

Has to be watching Evel Knievel that got me into scrambling on my racer...

That's dirt jumping to you kids
;)

That was in the late 70s, then the Team Murrys & Mongoose Motomags starting coming over from the USA... I ended up with a MXII after killing 2 Piranhas, sweet :daumenhoch:

Beck jumping, indoor parks, riding down devils dip, the coal hills... Hartlepool was class then, and still is :)

So it's big jumps that did it for me...

Bren.

Rockwalk, but not with brakes like Mr A Ruffell, looked great if you could pull off 2 or 3 in a row but you had to be going pretty quick,  :2funny:

Same as most on here, especially Bren.

Evel Knievel was my hero as a kid and I used to wheelie and jump everybike i had from my Tomahawk Formula 3 (gold, mags and 3 gears), then my grifter.

We used to make ramps out of anything we could find (mud or wood) and jump over things and each other.

Saw a red and yellow BMX in a local shop (must have been about 1980) and just wanted one. It looked so cool.

Didn't know much about the BMX scene in the states or uk, but got into once I had my MK1 burner. Then read everything i could about BMX and learned every trick that I could.

Happy days indeed.

I remember riding with James White late 80s early 90s.  It's funny cos I've found loads of old stuff at my mum's house recently. I found an old diary I had written (my school made us do this).  One entry read, I beat James White in a front hop comp. I did 35 to his 18.  :2funny:
