One piece crank failure?

Not been on here for a while but the urge for something old and rusty to rag through the woods has brought me back 

Just ordered a load of bits to rebuild an old Dyno VFR and I now have crank paranoia    Particularly wanted a pair of 165s as that's what I run on my other bikes but the cheapo ones I've bought have a tack-welded (for want of a better description) sprocket tab and I'm reminded of a painful knee/handlebar encounter when a previous similar crankset gave out on my old Curtis.



I'm only light but how common is sprocket tab failure? Not worth putting a three piece set on but should I ditch those and get a forged OPC?

Cheap is exactly that buddy. I had a mate back in the day who was running around on a Strattan Aero. He had a cheap Suntour copy stem on it and one day over the jumps, he took off, landed, and the stem cracked off from the quill. It left jagged edges and ripped his stomach and chest open as he went over the bars 

Cheap is just that. I would buy a good quality Sugino, Takagi or SR one piece if I were you

Are they Landar?

Why are you using 165? Just get a 175 Sugino.

No, not Landar Devilock - they're stamped with a weird curly A and YL165 so cheap cr@p I guess.  175s just feel weird to me as I'm used to 165s on my MTBs and I'm only little.  I've managed to find 170s with a forged tab so may go for those to be on the safe side.

165 are for little ones as they spin up easier. 165 s usually come on kiddy toystore bikes . 

some fixie clowns and track riders use them for the same reason .

generally people with no legs . 

i should be selling a opc and bb tomoz after i get a bike . i ll send you some pics . they are black but may be shiny underneath .

I ran 165's on my motomag, but i'd just go with a decent 175 by already mentioned brands, easy enough to find

A lot of Mongoose cranks were 165mm, takagi made and run a 28tpi BB

If that's what you use might be worth investing in something decent and switch them from bike to bike.

Right I have a proper 165mm chrome 1 piece crank it's a hollow one Takagi I think from the mid 1980's in very nice condition if your interested I will dig it out for you

Damn, me and my impatience.  That sounds perfect bodamus but I've just ordered a forged 170mm jobbie.  I'll see how it goes but I may well be in touch later
