Im not sure soaking does a great deal to be honest. The problem is that i bought all the dowels for the frame kiln dried which sets the lignin in the wood (the stuff that makes it flex) It cant really be unset by water thought water can soften the wood itself a little.

Made a jig for the slight S shape in the chainstays. Hopefully the curves are gentle enough to bend the dowels but i suspect i may need green Ash for that too  :(
Get some metal tubes, belive they work quite well on bicycles

Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

I did think that and they would be easy enough to do but I'm going for an early look and 4 piece bars don't really convey that. Might make a set anyway  :daumenhoch:

How early? VC8s were around in 82/83.   ELF blast bars were much later but have no bends but would look out of place.

This project has been taunting me in the corner of the workshop for too long now. This afternoon I decided it was about time I did some more. 2 hours of polishing, sanding and repolishing and I finally got one side of one dropout to the finish needed to be plated  :)

Well, my spot of fettling for the lake ride trophy (and a fire at the big workshop) has got me back on the job. Got the fine mahogany inlay banding done today, well pleased.

Tasty top tube action  :)

Looks like my green wood troubles for the steam bending might be over. Amazingly found a guy coppicing timber in Manchester today. Looks like the bars may be from wood felled right next to city's ground  :daumenhoch:

Oh aye there'll be plenty of bendy branches in there after a lifetime of catching cookers, couches, fridges and tele's.   :LolLolLolLol:

Ah happy memories of an urban childhood. Dirty mags in the bushes, a game of kerby and jamming the phone box coin return hopper to collect a bit of pop money  :smitten:

Well its been a while, far too long in fact but i finally got back to doing a bit today. Thought it was time to do a test fitting for the tenoned socket fittings for each tube.
Because i had to cut the original tube out and file them flush with the lugs, (they were braised in), it meant i couldnt just insert the ash dowels stright into each lug socket. Each dowel end with have to have a custom tenon cut to match each lug socket  :'(

Happy with how its going so far  :daumenhoch:

Its pretty tight bud but will be smearing the lug sockets with an industrial strength epoxy  :daumenhoch:
