Got quite a bit done today. Started off scribing the profile of the bars on some card as a template and cut some scrap ply to the shape. Just need to cut two wedges tomorrow to set the back sweep to the right angle in the jig.

Got the steam box finished too. Fitted the internal racking for the ash timber and a valve to connect the wallpaper steamer to  :daumenhoch:

Big day tomorrow, first attempt at the bars awaits  :D

The big steam event was a bit of a non starter. Fooking posh extension lead kept tripping out so will try again tomorrow with something a little older  ;)

Gave me time to tweek the jig though with a few additional formers and turn buttons

Rich, the theory is that most timbers take around an hour per inch thickness in the steamer then you get around a minute to do your thing before it starts to stiffen up again
ooohh errr missus  ;D

Tell me about it. Todays efforts resulted in some intersting looking kindling  :LolLolLolLol:

I suspect a combination of a tight radius and the ash being kiln dried rather than green (undried) has stumped me today.
I have 2 dowels left and may soak them for a few days to see if it helps. I suspect it wont  >:(

Thinking cap need a dusting off, would really like timber bars if possible  :)

Maybe time for some 4 piece bars i.e. Vector styled ones where you can mitre the joints, just a thought...

I did think that and they would be easy enough to do but I'm going for an early look and 4 piece bars don't really convey that. Might make a set anyway  :daumenhoch:

I'm sure you can do it mate , like you said maybe a good soak will do the trick or maybe some green wood . Keep it up dude , I'm looking forward to your next instalment  :daumenhoch:

It will work with green ash I've done it but still takes a good bit of effort, I was trying to make an old fashioned catapult   :-[

IMHO as I'm not a carpenter I'd sack it off and go for laminate, would this also not have the advantage of being less susceptible to expansion and shrinkage, I've read that's a possible problem with the bamboo bikes.

If you're going to soak the wood prior to steaming. Would adding a wetting agent to the water help the water penetrate further into the wood and give you a bit more flexability?

Im not sure soaking does a great deal to be honest. The problem is that i bought all the dowels for the frame kiln dried which sets the lignin in the wood (the stuff that makes it flex) It cant really be unset by water thought water can soften the wood itself a little.

Made a jig for the slight S shape in the chainstays. Hopefully the curves are gentle enough to bend the dowels but i suspect i may need green Ash for that too  :(
