Tioga BB question
« on: March 21, 2015, 06:38 PM »
I have a Tioga bear trap bb attached to a takagi opc, and want to remove the spider to clean it. What size is the nut between the spider and the drive side bb cone?
I must have a crank spanner that fits, because I fitted it in the first place, but can't find it so need to get another...

The old raleigh bike spanner is too small.

So now I need a super thin 34mm x 2mm thick spanner that can get in between the spider and the BB cone...

any ideas?

Normally the cone screws up against a washer which is up against the spider, so it's the cone you need to loosen.

As they usually don't have flats for a spanner I use a vice, vice grips or stilsons.

The bit between the spider and the cone/backnut is a washer / shim. How do you hope to loosen it when the cone/backnut is clamped to it ?

how has this thread got so confusing?

to take the spider off you need to remove the nut holding it on to the crank.

either you take it off using a spanner and turn it aginst the stationary crank or you clamp the nut and turn the crank against the staionary nut!

whether there is a washer/spacer in between the nut and the spider is irrelevant!

doesn't that seal just slide off back over the crank leaving you with access to the nut?

The black seal will come off, but the bearing cone is still there hard up against the nut, and bigger than it, so you need to get in between.

Is the nut actually part of the cone, or are they separate?

If the seal comes off away from the chainring then just get a huge set of mole grips on it

Mole grips will chew the edge of the bb cone, and I want to reuse it...

All is now clear  ;D I just widened an old Raleigh bike spanner with a file and it seemed to work fine on mine.  Fingers crossed someone has not over tightened it though.......
