Okay......after lots of help and advice from you guys, i went and bought some Oven pride (£3.60 in ASDA) you get the solution, gloves and a bag to put your bits in.
all i had was a red-ish stem i wanted to clean up so here's how to do it.
Firstly here's the stem before hand.....
So open the oven pride box, put the gloves on for protection (make sure you're in a well vented area and try not to breathe in any fumes) put your bits in the plastic bag provided....then just poor in the Oven pride gloopy stuff!
Leave the bag in a plastic bucket for a few minutes, maybe giving the bits a little rub just to help the process.
Then after you're happy the anodising has been removed, simply wash out the bag (with the bits and gloop inside) with soapy water....it's then safe to wash down your sink (so the instructions say) and then you should have........
and to help with the Mrs you can always put the oven grills in afterwards!
