Mongoose Motomag 1979
« on: March 06, 2015, 03:58 PM »
Well here I go again, another project after finishing my Mongoose California Special ('82).... seen here;

Had this imported from the States, and although its not the finest of examples, a bike that has literally been sat stood still for years, still has bags of appeal.  8)
My normal procedure after countless Burner restorations (of which I now own none)... I have moved onto these awesome bikes.

I think for now, other than some black survivor tyres, I will re-grease, re-build back up properly (as shown is just a very loose fit), and leave as is.
Something about it that just looks so cool! anyway... here she is... hope you like!  :daumenhoch:

Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

Awesome bike  :4_17_5: I think those bikes along with motomags (which I didn't see a lot of when I was young bitd) are so iconic of the whole bmx scene  :daumenhoch: I'd be so tempted to leave exactly as it is also  :4_17_5:

Hi guys, well since I posted this thread... the bike has been transformed beyond any recognition!  :shocked:

This is the same frame, but since picked up Ashtabula forks and new pretty much everything else...  8)

Shout out me all you like  :2gunsfiring_v1:, but this for me, not only looks amazing, but rides so good with the sealed BB and the lush headset...  :slayer:

I like it now, however I don't like the Ashtabula fors on it.  I do like Ashtabula's but with the parts you have the Ashta's are too early, put the other forks back on and it will be pukka.

I really like it but I can see why people are taking views... my views are a bit "live and let live"... at the end of the day its a collection of parts and nothing has been damaged, and it's the owners call!

Here is mine, which is a 78 (comes with the coaster brake mount on the frame) and when I took it apart I found the bearings and chainwheel are schwinn. The bars, cranks and forks are all cast by ashtabula. Everything is original spec (I hope!) tyres and grips are replacements.

Cheers

Early mongooses used schwinn parts before stamping their own in 79, Tange were the makers of the headsets and bb's
