Best way to remove a "Dirty Skirt"!
« on: December 27, 2014, 05:55 PM »
OK OK put those images out of your mind!!!!! :D

Right back on track

I am having a colour change and wonder in "Your" experience guys whats the best way to remove the crown race from the forks without damaging the Dirt Skirt.

I have thought about some medium in between the drift and the DS like plastic.

Anybody have a brain wave?

Cheers

Dirt skirts are as fragile as jam tart tins, i'm sorry to say that you've got very little chance of not damaging it when removing the crown race. BITD they were about 50 cents and not really designed to be reused.

WELD A TUBULAR SPACER TO THE CROWN RACE AND THEN YOU CAN PULL I OFF !!!

Mole grips very loosley tightened to the crown race stop and gently tap against the bottom of the dirt skirt  :daumenhoch:

Use a little heat from blow torch and a wedge drift to get is started, you can then use a flat end drift it just helps get it going it should then come off easy, be carful just take your time

Thanks all, will update if i ever get around to it and succeed. I think grinding the crown race and stopping before i hit the DS may work. I wonder has any body split the crown race before fitting it. I had this on a high level MTB. Of course when tightened up it all stays in place nice. Also allows removal with ease.

Cheers
