X3 custom builds (new uk member)
« on: December 15, 2014, 10:55 AM »
Hi all, new member here in the U.K, been into bmxing since I could ride a bike, always had bmx's and currently building them to my taste/design, starting off with an old chrome redline frame I've had for 15yrs+

Started like this

I removed the single top tube, sleeved and extended the rear tubes to make a twin top tube frame

I painted it black to start with, but soon changed my mind as didn't like how it looked

I stripped it and did a looptail conversion on it

I then bought a Gary Fisher frame from eBay for £21, as it had the right style of frame for a twin top tube conversion, so did a similar job on it as the redline

It had a few decent bits on it so thought it was a good buy! Started off like the redline with the twin top tube conversion and reprofiled the rear drop outs

[/URL]

All welded up

Painted

Building up

I used a single speed crank and BB from eBay which cost me £20 in total

I've got another build on the go but will upload pics/info later :)

Cheers mate! About time I stuck some pics up, I know they're not stock, but as you can see I didn't start with much, so anything rideable at the end of each build is a bonus :)

This is my other build, started at a seized up Mello Yello

Not sure where this ones heading, thinking metallic blue/chrome with spoked wheels :)

I do like twin top tubes, but it's more the fabricating/customising that I like, I have other more standard bmx's like a kalkhoff, BH California, Barbican and tensor, which will all remain with stock frames, but seeing as the frames I've modified cost very little to buy in the 1st place (or I'd already had them) I thought I'd do something different with them other than another standard rebuild :)

In twenty years time future bmx enthusiasts are gonna be having nightmares trying to identify your stuff.  :LolLolLolLol:
At least you've only butchered low end stuff which is good.
Good work mate... you've got skills.  :daumenhoch:

Cheers! I love fabricating/modifying, so thought I'd combine my 2 passions! I wouldn't chop anything of value, most I've spent on a frame to chop is £21, so no biggy if it doesn't turn out right! Lol they've already had a few people scratching their heads as to what they are/were :)

Yeah they are MIG welded instead of TIG welded, plenty strong enough (I sleeve the tubes for extra strength) I've rode them all hard to try break them, but not even a sign of any cracks or splits :)

Cheers for the positive comments guys, got a few more builds planned, including a VDC style frame and a TRM style frame :)

Obviously the ones on the twin top tunes are smoothed flush to make it 1 continuous tube

I'm not a welder? What you on about? Lol I was trying to replicate the TIG welds but with a mig, so pulse welded that bit, the rest of the welds are all seam welded and smoothed to give the look of continuous solid tubing, and all the joins are sleeved internally and plug welded each side of the join like in the 1st few pics.

If you have a problem with what I'm doing, or how I choose to weld my frames, then please don't bother to post on my thread. I've rode all my bikes fairly hard that I've welded and all are fine and very solid.

Play nice peeps  :police:

Hats off to you Olds - my welding sucks ass and that weld looks well good for a MIG - half the seattube would be gone if I did it  :LolLolLolLol:
