Anybody tried dyeing grips?

Got some old red original Mongoose grips that I have scrubbed to clean up and they are pretty faded.

Reckon they will dye OK??

I think it has been tried before, but with no success  :(
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'
