Just laced my 1st wheel, Well I actually placed the new rim under the the old wheel and dropped the spokes down one at a time :LolLolLolLol:
Being putting it off, Worried about scratching the NOS rim. Very theraputic like people have said. Better than watching I was a celebrity.
Thanks Spen69 for the advise and Dodge for the rims. Will do the other one tomorrow and then get LBS to true them :daumenhoch:

I find lacing is the hard part and truing is the easy bit

True em yourself fella.

Get a set of forks (14mm if you need em) slot in wheel, and masking tape/sellotape a single spoke in touching the rim. Rotate round, find the wobbles, tighten/loosen spokes and job done.

If you haven't done all the spokes up to the same tension before this, use that bent spoke technique that John has popped a piccy up of on here.

I can bring it to Beast tonight Jim if you can true it quick? It's built and tightened in the right place, just needs a final tweak :angel:

truing a wheel is quite simple, i normally use a couple of cable ties cut down to just touch the rim. always work on the worst bit first. spin the wheel slowly and look for when the cable tie touches the rim. mark the spoke on the opposite side then slowly rotate the wheel till the cable tie stops hitting the rim and mark the spoke opposite again. it will normally be about 3-5 spokes. now give the marked spokes and the ones inbetween a quarter turn. then repeat as necesary. just remember, if the wheel hits on the left side tighten the spokes on the right side and visa versa.  :daumenhoch:

Going to swap the other rim over tonight after Gotham. It's not the side to side that worries me. Its making sure the hub is in the middle up/down(Think of them clown bikes with reversed steering that ride like a bucking bronco) and also the rim is central over the hub. Hope that makes sense.

knock a couple of these up with different amounts of thread sticking out , thread it into the  nip and then thread the nip onto the spoke, the nip will stop when the two threads meet  , then unscrew the tool , this will get all the spokes to the same tension , and should almost eliminate the the up and down wobble , and center the rim over the hub , if the spokes are the same size both sides, rear hubs with different size flanges take a little bit more tweaking to get the rim  central, always built my own wheels G, drop me a pm if you get stuck  :daumenhoch:

I do the same kind of thing but with an old flat head screwdriver that I have filed down to make a nipple driver.  This way I screw the nipples down the same everytime.

i have one of them too, i put a couple of 90 degree bends in it and sealed bearings so i could count the rotations easier.

also its a small thing but get a decent quality correctly sized spoke key , park tools ones are good , well  worth the extra few quid  :daumenhoch:
