Skyways dyed patchy!!!
« on: December 03, 2014, 11:40 PM »
ive been dying to sets of skways one red and one orange, the red was og white but ur able to peel the dye on the rim of it and its patchy, what can i do with that problem as it seems as if there is like a paint or something on it.

The ones am trying to dye orange were og yellow but there is all patchy bits over both wheels what can be the cause of this, just there was nothing on the wheels to not let the dye take too it how can i get the whole of the wheels dyed properly?

cheers graham :daumenhoch:

Did you keep the water/dye/salt solution at a decent temp throughout?  ???

is there a definitive guide to doing this anywhere? I was about to try dying a white Peregrine mag black but this has put me right off.

What I would do is strip them using aqua or soda blasting to remove anything that might be painted on.  I've never seen a reaction to the dye like the one you have experienced when doing this before.  I have dyed very faded yellow back to yellow (if that makes sense) with no issues so I think you could be right there must be a contaminant on the surface preventing the dye from being absorbed.

I reckon that they have had either oil / wd40 / grease on them at some point through general use and the dye has not took because of that.  Couple of cycles on pot wash through the dish washer with a finish dish washer cleaning bottle instead of tabs is usually enough to strip the grease from most things........

Worth a try before you dye so to speak  ;D

Seen that effect on a yellow pair fraz tried to dye blue.

cant ya pour the bleach into a big plastic bag, big enough to hold the wheel, close it and put it in a box with the 'styrofoam beads' or whatchamacallit ....... idea is to reduce the volume of bleach to an amount just enough to cover the rims ........... Caus i guess bleach might be way to go to get rid of the smeary stuff.

or just try the sand paper first, see if it  "help" s :(

Right I have to cut in here !

I did a write up of how to dye mags and sent it to graham to help him.
As some of the older members will know that I can dye mags and have had sucsess with my method, also doing a couple of write ups with pictures to show from start to finish !

I tell people that you need to clean these in hot soapy to make sure all foreign items /chemicals are off
You need to realise that grease and brake rub can affect the dye and make it not even in places -

What has happened here is Graham said he did not wash off the bleach and also used grease to cover the alloy hub !
Now people have said in the past to cover the hub with grease to protect it ? I have found that you don't needed it and it can hinder the process !
The grease melts in the hot water and spreads around the mag rim and sticks to them, this is where the grease stops the dying process and makes it look patchy - it's as simple as that !
You can polish the hub back up with wire wool to a original look or close, you can also polish to a slight shine or high mirror shine !

I don't know what the peeling part is ? Brake rub ? Old grease ? Paint ?

Sorry to say I went through all of this last week with Graham

Don't use grease - do a bit more hard work to make the mags look good

Wire wool polish

Polished to a close mirror finish

Back to yellow OGK's

Bunch of Acorns

Back to black

Polished hubs

One set done and one still to do

Third set of reds done

Whites sanded / shaped with razor / bleached

Aero Zytecs back to red

OGK's back to red / polished axle kit

Zytecs to blue

Back to black and polished hubs

Kashi dyed red

And polished guts

Z's sanded shaped and bleached

Original dye charts

More white Z's sorted

More and more white Z's

As you can see I'm not new to the game ; )

Greasing up the flanges/alloy hub when bleaching is fine - there is no dye involved at this point !

As of late
Bleaching is fine - but don't leave them in too long ! If after a day or so they are not going whiter, then they won't and they may start yellowing in places !
Aqua spraying is one way, but can put a rougher texture on the mag surface
Peroxide bleaching is another way to bring up dull white mags (no one has tried colours yet ? )
You need sun light for best effect

Dying mags only takes less than a day - so will not pit the alloy !

Cheers B

I had listened, never had problems doing z rims or seat but skyways are a real bollocks as they move about too much and pop up out of the water, rite so can i rub the bits on the orange ones with wirewool, acetone,ETC,ETC,

You said you never washed them after the bleach ?
I said you need to cover the top of the mags by about 2 inches !

I would try bleaching them first to see if you can take the colour out, wirewool, you might have to do the whole mag or it will be patchy !

Well it should have been 2 bottle of bleach and the rest water ! Don't know who said 20 bottles ?

Bin them if you want, but you are only wasting money, as it would not take much to sort the mags out ! Would seem a shame
