Freewheel Tool...

To remove a freewheel, is this the only tool i need...



Is there a specific size / type i need for old school shimano...(As i usually buy the wrong one)...

Is there also another tool for holding the axle nut...

Take the wheel nut off, slide the tool on till it fits into the freewheel, put a washer on the axle and screw the wheel nut back on to hold the tool onto the freewheel but don't tighten it (helps to stop it slipping), put the tool in a vice or use a shifter to turn anti-clockwise or as it you are pedalling back wards.

So the axle remains fully intact, it doesn't need to come apart...



I thought i may have needed another tool to fit the angled axle nut...

I'll nip down to Halfrauds tomorrow and buy one...

No, the alloy cover in the pic is just a cover over the cone which stops crud getting in the bearing and it spins around, don't damage it as they are like hens teeth.

Since you've taken the rim off it's difficult to get the freewheel off without damaging the hub, you need the rim spoked to the hub so you can hold it while you screw the hub off.

You'll need to lace the rim back onto the hub.

Will have a go without lacing it back up...

The rim is just back from Anodising, and i would be scared to damage it...

I have new spokes / nipples at the ready...

If you try to hold/grip the hub you'll most likely end up crushing/damaging it as it is really soft alloy, you need to hold the hub using the spokes, tis the only way.   

Get an old rim, any old 36h rim will do the job, spokes don't have to be tight or tensioned, you just need them attached so you can hold or turn the hub.

Definitely get an old rim because those can be a fooker to get off and the rim can take a battering.

you should only need to build the spokes on the freewheel side too and you may get away with only building half of them as long as you cross a few of the spokes.

Just went down to Halfords, then remembered some wee feckers burnt it to the ground...

Gonna order one off the bay...

Bought a tool...

Fecking thing didn't fit into Freewheel properly...It just wouldn't seat right...



So , after an hour of filing...
I got it in...

I used an old rim...Ta, Rod...

And after much pulling & pushing, off the fecker came...



Will build up at weekend...
