Is it being bought from a retailer or a personal purchase?

Lookup on the HMRC website tho it's a lot of txt. The main bit you need to check is weight and recorded value.
Buying a framed from a retailer  is most likely going to lump you 21% tax duty on the value AND a Royal Mail fee ontop. Usually no less than £8.
Some kind private sellers mark the package as 'gift' which potentially can save you some if this but only up to a certain combined value.
I learnt my lesson hard building my 30th anniversary Ripper. Even when seller agrees to 'gift' if they don't and send it's too late for you, pay up or you won't get your goods! I use an app called 'DutyCalc' to work it all out.

Oh so consider if frame and forks send separately, you might getaway with the forks marked low value or gift but the frame is gonna cost, I'd be well surprised if it doesn't!

Planert BMX will mark the box with total cost and postage price. It will also marked as 'Merchandies' as they are legally obliged to do so. You will get hit with the Custom charges and Parcel Force handling fee. The PF fee is £8, standard charge for paying your customs up front and then billing you for it.

A complete bike will generally stand you at around £120 - £150 in charges.

Yup Gnarlyscoots right.  Your mates got to factor in any US cost saving over our sick import system. For instance I got some freestyle landing gear for about £30 but after postage from US, UK bastard customs and Royal Mail took their cut it came to roughly £110. They got v brake pegs on, never seen them here so I had to import.

I've just received an email from ups tracking saying there's import duty due on a frameset from the us.
Sellers clearly marked gift & $ 40 value on the forms .....WTF !!!

If HMRC deem the address that the package has sent from is a COMMERCIAL address they can charge VAT and handling REGARDLESS of what the value says and whether GIFT has been ticked. You can contest it but you need proof that it IS a gift from the seller and not merchandise.

It's a lottery; sometimes it makes no difference what is indicated on the form.
