New school head sets

Hey guys i am trying to fix a mates kids haro new school and it has no real headset as such how do I tighten it it seem to just have a load of rings and then u put the stem on what gives Confused

Lee tighten the two bolts at back of the stem then tighten the bolt on the top. Simples.

It's as if there is play in the bearings in old school terms you would do up the top nut and hey presto

loosen off the stem bolts then tighten up the top cap/bolt.  don't over tighten it though just enough to make it tight, then test for movement in the headset.....should be free of movement, if not then the bearings maybe shot or there's not enough spacers under the stem.....the fork stearer tube should be about 5mm under the top of the stem.

If there's no movement in the bearings then do up the stem bolts and job done.

make sure the stem bolts are loose when tightening up the top cap else it's not going to tighten up any slack in the headset.

yeah top bolt first to compress it together then side bolts, if still loose then a spacer may be required

They seem to work ok but you can't beat a threaded headset IMO.
I had to sit down and work it out on my son's mafia bmx , just leave the stem slightly loose so when you tighten the allen key and cap it pushes it down to adjust the play them tighten the stem, once this is tight just nip up gently the allen key and cap

I initially thought it was a sh#te idea but they seem to work and take some stick

modern 1 1/8th headsets are way and above a crappy 1" threaded headset..........the new style headsets have to be one of THE most important evolution's in cycling.
