Seatpost Date Please

Hope this is the right section, sorry if not.

I recently bought some Odyssey Milk Bars via evilBay. Nice enough, but narrower than I'd expected. Not wanting to spend any more money (which would make the bars a lesser bargain), I wondered about widening them with a shim and some old seatpost.
And this is the only post I have:


It's an old layback, about 300mm to the start of the bend, reasonable chrome but marked by being used. Before I start hacking at it, would it be a reasonable re-purpose or sacrilege?

If it's worth more than a tenner I may as well save myself the faffing around, sell it and put the money towards some Deluxe extenders (or similar).

To be honest fella, I'd keep the seatpost and just get some extenders. You can guarantee in a few months (even if you swear blind now you're never gonna build another bike) that you'll need a seatpost for a build (even though it's a layback AND a GT  ).

I saw those when looking around for extenders, but not knowing if scooter bars were the same inner diameter and not wanting to risk it, moved on.

Send me your address and I will post you a piece of a post I have already hacked. That one is too nice to chop. Not sure of date but looks mid nineties based on the logo.

Used them to extend my standard 6 piece strip bars, worked perfectly only downside is u can't use bar plugs so I fitted odi longnecks with the enclosed end to hide the extender

Sorry to resurrect, chaps.
I went to a bike shop at the weekend and the guy there said to get wider bars, extensions wouldn't be safe to ride. So now I really don't know which way to go with this.

By the way, I found an old Freak Factory seatpost and took a couple of 1" sections off of it with a pipe cutter and a file. The GT post gets a stay of execution and probably another decade in the shed. Trouble now is that I've not found a single piece of steel tubing that fits the inner diameter.

I wish I'd just checked the width of the bars with the seller before buying.

Nowt wrong with them bar extenders mate. Look sturdy as fook to me.   
In fact so much so I've just ordered some myself.

Glad to be of service Ben. The happy-ish ending is that I thought 'screw it' and bought some Salt bars last night from Halfrauds in Sheff for the price of the extenders. The Milk Bars can sit and wait for something to come along, the Salt ones are lighter and a bit taller so more in keeping with the bike.

Nice one. Im going to risk some extenders, an inch should be fine. The bars that i over-trimmed have a reyt dandy paintjob.
